Ok ok, its probably been done many time before but I needed a flimsy excuse to post this.

If your car sounded like this, would you even wear ear plugs?

Listen especially at about 2:20 - if that doesnt send a shiver down your spine, there's a chance you dont have one.

Sounds good, but general PH consensus is the BRM V16 from 1949-55 is the best sounding. A 1.5 litre supercharged monster developing 600bhp.

Few samples on here - www.billzilla.org/engread.htm

It's a great sound (when it's going...) but a DFV still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, so that has to win for me

Matra V12s sound good too.

Pre war Mercedes and Auto Unions are also pretty raucous.

I think they were taken at a test at Goodwood, on the Loud pass clip after the car had passed the pits where the recording equipment is you hear it downchanging for turn 1 (Madgwick) then blasting down the next straight through Fordwater. This 2nd straight section with the car going away from the pits sounds just like a modern F1 car.

my favourite will always be the sound and feel of a big block 9 litre CanAm car, it shakes your chest as much as you hear it, awesome things they are.

Hmm I don't know - personal preference I guess. The first clip with Brock sounds a lot like a nascar v8 put through a variety of rpms for a road course to me. Nice but not too special. Brocks car control is stellar. With the turbo Lancia, the engine is so muffled all you hear is a lot of gear whine rather then the engine.

I like the buzz saw v12's of Ferrari's, the AM vanquish racer and the v16 has that sound too. That said, I also like the TVR tvr v8's and inline 6's.

Youtube is no substitute for hearing the car in person.

I'll never forget when I heard an indy race car in the middle of no where in Indiana driving down the hwy. It sounded soo flat at low rpms - like a flat tire spinning laterally!

Mmmm... listen to that gear box
sounded lovely from the outside, but like most modern cars in the onboard footage all you can hear is the gearbox.

How about this little lot then, for me the carb fed flat 12 on the over run is the best of the bunch. But as someone said about this advert, eat your heart out Honda
