How are you suggesting that would work?

Usually by directing the exhaust gases into a turbine which then drives a compressor for the inlet, thereby increasing power...
that's what you meant isn't it?

What is this obsession that turbos would make things any better? All they would do is change how the engines delivered their power!

It's Aero that causes the overtaking problems.

Still, I love F1 still. I think it's genuinely exciting.

I can see it won't be long before somebody suggest a power-boost button.......

bring back proper wide tyres, open engine regs, and limit wing area's

I agree.

For me, F1 is just SO much more than cars going round and round a track and sometimes overtaking. So much so that other forms of motorsport just don't captivate me so much.

For me, it is the teams, the cars, the strategy, the pit gossip, the drivers, the politics and all the other things that make up the rich tapestry that is F1 that is the interest.

Ok, so we get more overtaking in the pits than the track a lot of the time. But, for me, that can be just as exciting. The timing and strategy of when to come in, the frenetic activity of the pit stop, the frantic scrabble to get out in time, the other car coming down the main straight and the holding-the-breath will-he-won't-he as the car that has pitted comes out, keeping an eye on the white line, and then sometimes the tangle on the next corner like Button did today (unless I'm misremembering).

Nope, F1 is far more than just motor racing. I can see loads of that on Motors TV, but it just doesn't do it for me like F1 does.

JonRB - agree with your football analogy - can't stand it football but I don't keep putting down football fan mates.

Toad - brilliant write up, I'm just a bit worried that I knew who you were referring to with your nick names

.....................

Loved the Airplane joke - well done.

My ideas for making F1 better - no TC, reduce the aero and bring back big sticky slicks.

Torro Rosso: Getting quicker this race which is good sign, Speed might have got a points finish without the tyre blow out. Better.

Speed was having a storming race, he was last on the grid but 14th by lap 2 !

Substitute interesting for exciting and you're about right

When there were no compulsry pitsops adn no stupid grooved tyre regs you had far more variables. Senna won races when his ability cimbined with strategy was so superior to other teams he was 20 seconds ahead before they realised he wasnt making a stop.

Reducing the aero allowed would make overtaking easier and the cars look better, return to slicks and wider rear tyres
also.

Just watch some races from as recently as 88-90 to realise how much better the racing was and how much more skill was required to drive a F1 car

all on its way - tc banned from next year, Bernies openly said about getting rid of the silly winglets so they can get closer to each other and reducing the brake size. Slicks are set to come back to rebalance the grip levels.

For once i agree with Clarkson "pay the drivers 25 grand a year and a million quid a point" that should get them to overtake.

I think the changes to the circuit which were designed to improve overtaking actually make it more difficult and the idea that to slow the cars down to close them up before a long straight doesn't work. The trouble is that the car in front will always be on the throttle before the one behind. What you really need is long, fast, but not quite flat out, corners before a straight. Something that sorts the men from the boys and highlights any minor handling difficulties in the car. Look at Spa, Mangy Cours, and Silverstone. All have excellent overtaking opportunities into Les Combes, the Adelaide Hairpin and Stowe respectively, each of which are preceeded by fast corners.

I hereby start my campaign to put an end to this woolly thinking.

Thank you for the praise, its appreciated.

Quick bit of gossip for you, The Mighty Chin might be into his last year. Apparently his autobiography comes out at the end of the year and he is trying to get planning permission for the first of his new chain of super luxury hotels in the UK. But thats strictly on the QT....boxedin

I am still confused that the cock was sure Hamilton had the 'race in the bag', 10 laps in when Massa was pulling 3/4 of a second a lap out of him confused

OK, it was accepted Hamilton had a little more fuel, but it was soon clear he wouldn't get the time back on pace alone.

That shows the extent of you F1 knowledege, ZERO.

What they actually need is to rely less on aero grip & more on mechanical grip.

The overtaking issue are arising from a following car not being able to get close enough through the corners to enable an overtaking manouver.

Therefore, if the cars had to run a single element front & rear wing only, but return to fat slicks, the grip would be biased more towards mechanical grip, not aero grip.

Loved the airplane-esq joke.

as i always say in these conversations, i think what F1 needs is to lose all aero except front and rear wings and force foot clutches and manual H-box gearchanges...

That'd sort the men from the boys!

I also agree with the football comments, it does seem people watch F1 for no other reason than to critise it - though I have to say it was a scuffy race more in tune with the late 90's than the recent professionalism...

Ok, I will. What is wrong with that idea so long as it was a significant boost meaning the drivers would actually use it?

Spanish GP is always a dull reace after the first corner...

Just got fed up with the cock.. if he says Alonso was outclassed by his rookey temamante once more I swear I'll crush a grape.... furious

Cock gets more annoying every race especially now we have a Brit doing well...

Top drive by Massa, Lewis and DC, Alfonso didn't look overjoyed did he!

PH always used to call him Alfonso in the post race talks at Williams, always caused a chuckle amongst everyone, he did it for weeks, until someone corrected him.

I thought previously that cock had improved but this race he was worse than ever, they mentioned early how renault had a fuel rig problem and had some pit radio saying the same, but when Fisi pitted for a third time he suddenly didn't know why, plus his ridiculous idea that Hamilton was going to catch Masa, sheesh rolleyes
