The guy is good enough to be competitive at 43. That puts him in a class of 4...him, Graham Hill, Fangio and Black Jack.

Thats some group.

I thought he was referring to tyres, ie the softer yellow tyre.

Just curious, has Schuey ever won without traction control? The Benetton had dodgy software and T/C was allowed in his dominant era at Ferrari, iirc?
That's right ladies and gentlemen the sound you hear is 7 world championship trophies having 'Mr TC' etched on them over the name Schumacher.

+1, his titles are tainted. Found out to be an average driver.

In the current (Oct 2012) issue of F1 Racing magazine, there's an interview with Schumacher. Asked whether anything in F1 today irritates him, he replies "Black gold. Think about it."

OK, I know I'm being totally thick here, but I have thought about it and I don't know what he's referring to: could it be something to do with Lotus, or oil (sometimes referred to as black gold), or even Lewis? But why would any of those irritate him?scratchchin

Anybody got any ideas?
Phew - thank goodness for that: the responses seem to indicate that the meaning of his comment wasn't as obvious as I'd feared it was going to be - I'd thought I was going to have to do a getmecoat or a paperbag.

Mrs T suggested tyres - but if that was what he meant, why be mysterious about it, given that his feelings about the Pirellis are well publicised?

Perhaps the middle-east-oil-money-creating-crap-circuits chaps may be on the right lines.

Black Gold he's on about the tyres. Durrr They are very inconsistent, you can have an epic set of tyres do nothing to the car, ambient temperature the same etc. Bolt on another set of italian finest and the car handle and feel completely diffrence. GP3 is the same, been told of large differences in circumference of brand new gp3 tyres. Just stty quality control I guess.

It's far simpler than all that. Work it out.

I thought long and hard about this. I eventually got it;

It's because people are not current or are ex-F1 champions
It's because people do not drive F1 cars
It's because people do not work within F1
It's because people do not earn a living from racing cars
It's because people do not even race cars
It's because people are stupid

Just a handful of reasons why people make such a mistake.

He himself has singled out Senna as the best driver. There has been a handful of drivers in their separate era's who have been great too. But to consider Schumacher to be "average" is to proudly wear a cap with the letters T W A and T in bold and underlined. On fire.

The meaning of black gold has historically been that of oil of course. If we accept that he has a good grasp of English and one assumes that he has not suddenly decided to rewrite the dictionary, then oil it almost certainly is.

Is he criticising the power that the oil producing countries exert on the championships? Or, perhaps, the greening of F1?

I would hazard a guess that it's about the former: the power that the oil producing countries exert on F1.

Tyres i'd wager. Basically in his reign he designed the tyres and made sure they suited him....last two seasons hes not had the advantages he enjoyed previously.
Dont get me wrong the bloke is a legend, but we will never see someone win 7 titles again cause its dare i say it, fairer now.
You might like to ponder on how he got into a position to excercise such dominance and influence both within Ferrari and elsewhere...

Massa's been pretty average at Ferrari for a while now and he doesn't seem to be able to bend Pirelli to his will. :-)

5.

Mansell's last win came at 41, as I recall.

Has to be the influence of the oil producing nations - the new circuits are, on the whole, awful.

If you read the article in motorsport a couple of issues back, pat symonds explained about the TC thing. He said there was a part if the programme designated TC, but they proved to the FIA that if you activated it, it did nothing.
So i would suggest that their software wasn't as dodgy as you might think

I agree regarding the Oil producing companies. Regarding Tyres, he's been pretty direct about such things and it's no secret he doesn't like the tyres. In a nutshell, if his complaint was about tyres, I think he would say.....Tyres..

'Oil producing countries' is a far more political issue hence the slightly indirect way of making the point. That's my 50p.

Has to be the middle east races. Oil money buys the races but they are poorly attended on unimaginative tracks and with the occasional civil war conflict outside the circuit as a compliment.

Abu Dhabi is up soon and look at the size of the armed forces ammassing within spitting distance of that circuit.

I think it would be very cynical and a bit silly to suggest it might be a racist reference to a black man with high earning potential, however satirically amusing.

I'm sure it was a joke but absolutely ZERO chance of it referring to L.H.
