Anyone want to get together for a Britcar Team PH 24hrs? And yes the costs are a lot more! I fancy doing it in a production class old M3 or Honda Type R.

Is the Britcar drive around £3-5k?

I'd be up for a place in a B (or C!) team.

realistically they started at 5k for 2006. 2007 might cost a bit more. I have contacts with a couple of teams if anyones interested. Im potentialy up for a B team in the 2cv's as long as the dates work out

Has anyone ever driven in the Snett 24hrs before?

A word of warning, I have run a car 3 times at Mondello and once at Snetterton, it isn't just a walk in the park. It is hard work for the team in general, you have to watch the "pros" who take it very seriously.

My 1st and last race that I managed a team, it wasn't my car but I was nominated to be the team manager and take hard decisions and had to stay up all of the night and eventually fell asleep at 8 am for about 2 hours.

If you want to get anywhere in the 24hr race you have to have a strategy, who is doing what etc, I had to strip engines down etc, even though I was the team manager. The guys we were sharing a pit with got very angry and het up if a pit stop wasn't going right, they eventually won the race. One of their drivers was the owner of the car I was running. We had 4 drivers, all but 1 were caterham graduate drivers and some didn't have the mentality to be endurance drivers.

I realised I was too heavy to race the 2cv when we had it, over 15 or 16 stone for a driver will give you a massive disadvantage, they can get upto 80mph or more now.

A TM needs to be awake all the time in a 24-hour. The mechanics grab bits of sleep because their work is in energetic bursts, but TM has to know what's happening at all times.

I was fetched from my slumber when the car needed refuelling. I knew exactly what was going on because I told them to nurse the car to the finish. I went to sleep just after we'd made a driver change and refuelled, I told the team to keep me informed of any blip in performance.

Before liken it to Silverstone, Willhire, Spa or Nurburg 24 hours you have blown it out of all proportion. I bet Hugh Chamberlain had rest in the middle of Le Mans, why do all the team managers look so fresh at Le Mans? Coz they have a large motorhome with nice hot running water and a comfy bed to sleep in.

hehe

I can't speak for the really big factory teams, but the smaller ones definitely don't have relief personnel - unless a cigarette and a 'comfort break' are needed (though you still keep your radio on in the lav)...

Ahonen, You are speaking from years of experience in proper endurance with proper racing cars, not Citroen 2cvs!
Your teams that you have worked for may not have had motorhomes but they do run 150mph+ sportscars.

The saving grace of 2cv racing is, if you have a problem most other teams will at least give advice and another is that there are hardly any retirements, when the car has been rolled etc it still makes the chequered flag! I saw a picture of my old car on its roof with the new owner driving, I got very upset at the sight!

Thanks for the advice.

So I need to stop eating pies and get a team manager sponsored by Red Bull?

When is it? You could hire me if you'd like! I am very experienced! If it is the (ex)"Stingray 2" car, its my old 1! apparently!

Ted, an espresso machine is the single 'must have' item for 24 hour racing. And lots of cigarettes - even if you don't smoke.

Rcarr - I'm only giving you a gentle ribbing mate. I've heard that the 2CV 24 is actually very competitive and tends to go right down to the wire.

ahonen, its good fun but some people take it far too seriously. I love it!

My car c.1997, we had a fourth driver lined up that year...Allan McNish, it was for charity, but he phoned my Mum while she was half asleep, asking for me and Dad but she said I was at school and Dad was at work, he said he was going to Austria to sort out another contract for a race driver, so he couldn't drive for us!

We found out around Le Mans time it was for Roock Racing at Le Mans in a Porsche GT1, the funny side of the story was that he got his come-uppance that year, his Porsche GT1 lasted 1 hr, our 2cv lasted 24hrs.

The next year he was driving the works car and won Le Mans outright!

At last year race (my first visit) when ever i went to the bank to watch be it couple of hours after the start, midnight... silly o clock or in the morning - they where still going round the corners 3 abreast... packs of cars slipstreaming up Revett - like a slow motion action replay of the earlier Caterham race

I think its hilarious when they go slipstreaming around the circuit, I have never raced one but I am sure you can get a fantastic tow off another car. It didn't happen so much at Mondello though!

If you do want to go 24 hour racing then get fit.

Forget all the bollox about coffee and red bull. A momentary high followed by a long dip.

Drink loads of water, eat properly - pasta and other foods that steadily release energy. Don`t touch sweets or sugary drinks as the result is the same as coffee / red bull.

Even if you are just there for the crack preparing your body is "free" advantage. The other thing I would suggest is to get loads of practice on the circuit so that at night you know just where to turn in, where all the bumps areand so on. You won`t be able to use distant marks such as the mad tree at Sear or markers at the bomb hole. You need to feel the track around you more and that comes from experience. It`s also very hard to learn the circuit at night and all the drivers will need to do their night stints in order that everyone gets some sleep.

Finally make sure you`ve got somewere to rest. If you don`t own a motorhome then rent one for the weekend. Oh and eat carrots as I`ll wager 2CV lights aren`t quite as good as the ones we use on the GT3 !

The best of luck !!

Henry
