Why BMW kicked Prodrive into touch when they were doing so well, and why Team Italia Portugal? I mean who are they and what is their pedigree?

Politics - Prodrive created a base car and touted it round, BMW said yes to using the MINI on the basis that Prodrive would find a title sponsor (a la Blue Scoob) days to fund it. Prodrive produced a great car, but didn't get the sponsorship and wanted more wonga from BMW. BMW with an eye on German Touring cars said no, and promptly fell out with Prodrive.

So pulled their official backing, but are allowing Prodrive to develop the MINI and flog it to private customers. Why hell BMW have decided to use Team Italia is anybodys guess - perhaps just being nice to another Eurozone country. Possibly with an eye to taking it in house next year, had they pulled the entry totally the FIA may have got the hump!! That bit really is a mystery....confused

BMW have changed works team to BMW Italia as they have the funding in place to compete in the whole of the championship. This is a requirement of the championship. BMW will continue to support the development of the MINI and allow it to be homologated - also an FIA rule through prodrive.

It's not so much politics and expedience and money. Which prodrive don't have.

Looks like the end of Kris Meeke's career though.

Really bad for Kris Meeke, he showed some great pace last year, it's such a shame.

The bit I find interesting is why BMW have bothered deciding to let a 2nd rate team be it's work team. It would be bit like Mercedes getting fed up with McLaren and deciding that HRT is now representing it.

I know Prodrive screwed up with the funding and annoyed BMW, where as Team Italia have the dosh, but it's still a strange decision - the 'works' team didn't develop the car, as it ultimately a customer of Prodrive, who can still run customer cars, so why have BMW decided to have a team that will be consistently beaten by it's 'non works' team as the 'works' team. It just looks bad!!

I suppose to the casual observer a MINI is a MINI - so doesn't matter who is running it....

a quick edit of my footage from Swedish Rally last weekend. Filmed on my GoPro - was a brilliant and fairly cheap weekend away!

Atkinson is on the entry list for mexico as part of Monster World Rally Team according to iRally.

Block also confirms his WRC outings this year are limited to Mexico, New Zealand & Finland

Anyone seen Ken Block's new car?
I'm not his biggest fan as a rally driver but his car is lovely

Check out the video down the bottom of the page

Gutted that he isn't doing more WRC events even though I'm not a mega KB43 fan, he is at least very very entertaining.

You'd think they could've afforded the same paint for the front and rear wheels though hehe

I did like his parody interview video where he stated his aim was something like "to crash within the first three stages of a rally". biggrin

Whatever you think of Ken Block, he is the most famous Rally driver on the planet - look at the number of hits on YouTube for his videos....
He really has scaled back his WRC outings this year, which is a little worrying.

It really is telling that the WRC had to 'ship in' other celebrities Block, Raikkonen in the last few years as the WRC can't make their own.

An interesting article posted today....and how ISC/NOS got it wrong in only going after TV coverage, to the detriment of radio and printed media.

sadly thats true.

i marshaled at Parc Ferme on Wales Rally last year and drivers like matt wilson, Henning, Ogier and many more all managed to pass by hoards of spectators awaiting the cars arrivals with only a few 'true' rally fans asking for things signed. but as soon as block rolled up everyone had a Monster Hat/t-shirt/hoody/poster out waiting to get his autograph. so many had the Colin McRae Dirt games for him to sign, not even the games Block was associated with either ffs!

in his defence though, he hasnt done bad by the sport either, im sure theres a few fans wo have stuck around with their suport of the championship even minus his presence.
that and hes a great guy too, he had nothing but time for the fans, especially the younger kids.
one older guy had about 5 hats he wanted signed but block only signed 2 and said to the guy he's not doing anymore as they will only be on ebay later wink

also i cant get your irally link to work

There doesn't appear to be a proper link. However, it's titled: 2 Rallies down, 11 to go. WRC is still in business....

Interesting reading.

Who owns/runs wrc.com? I thought it was North One, but it still seems to be going after a brief pause as the season got under way.

Also who owns/runs iRally? You get the impression they are true enthusiasts rather than just in it for the money.

Cheers.

irally isnt run by NOS as far as i can tell, on the app it has an about us and in it, it states that its run and managed by enthusiasts (spelling?). and ends with 'iRally has no formal connection with WRC or IRC'
