I've just had an email, as follows;

>>>Please be advised that it is with regret that I have to advise you
of the cancellation of the 2007 Chieftain and Scorpion Sprints at
Longcross following the decision of QinetiQ Management to withdraw
the venue from ALL motor sport use.

This decision was confirmed this afternoon at a meeting between
myself (as MSA Liaison Officer), Ian Davis (MSA) and the appropriate
management at QinetiQ Farnborough.

The withdrawl is also effective immediately for all remaining motor
club bookings for rallies (Craven MC / Sutton & Cheam MC / Rally
Britannia / Bexley LCC / Oxford MC) and Sprint bookings (London Irish
MC).

This situation is subject to an on-going discussion although it
should be stressed that QinetiQ have stressed that they are unlikely
to reverse their decision. Should there be any favourable
development over the next few days then I will advise you
accordingly.>>>>>

No, I've no idea why, or if it's likely to be reversed.

QinetiQ don't own the site. However i believe they rent the site back from the property company that do. Let me see what i can find out

There was a death there a few weeks ago, on a sprint day, but does not seem to be related to the actual racing

It's never been easy to use MoD land for motorsport - sprints at places like Bovington and others have gone in recent years, generally for reasons that fall under the 'All Too Difficult Act'.

At Bovington I believe a change in policy at the Defence Land Agent meant that one year the fee for the use of the site was £400 and the next it was £4,000 - in effect rendering the sprint there unviable.

Probably Barry Guess (MSA Liaison Officer) - a very similar email has been posted on the Lotus 7 Club website.

A frustrating loss, not least because John Chisholm, boss of Qinetiq, is a racer himself.

Careful though - it's linked back to here too. Don't get stuck in a loop

Very sad news and my condolences but hardly a reason to stop motorsport at the venue. There must be more to it than that. I thought that Longcross was to be used on this years Tour Britannia because of the longer stage miles available. What happens to that?

The venue is back for a limited number of competitive events this year including 3 rallies and 2 sprints.

My club is running a rally on the 18th May and so if you want to Marshal or compete drop me a PM.

Sadly Longcross has been a bit unsettled for a couple of years now. If Barry has been liasing then believe me, he will be working hard to keep the venue alive.

Sadly the problem at Bovington was due to Noise complaints from army residents, after a rally there. Ironically it was organised by one of the military clubs.

Boscombe Down went because they only wanted us to use certain pieces of road. But you couldnt get from one piece to another without crossing the bits you were banished from!

Today I hear Llandow is going to make way for a housing development.

Still better than the problems we had at Cricket St Thomas, when we lost it to make way for Mr Blobby and his Crinkly Bottom!!

Odd since the WDA spent a large amount of money last year building a rather splendid new race control building. It's positively palatial up there.

Not forgetting the report that both Snetterton and Brands Hatch were included in development plans for new homes.

Never believe everything you read in the press. There are people with their own agendas, and motorsport venues are ideal targets as "they're not really necessary, are they?"

Well they are going to get rid of Deepcut and it will be a huge new housing development .. Longcross could also be due for the same ..

The Government want 3 million new homes built in the south .. if the land is not being used it add weight to the case.

Barry Guess - used to run Sutton & Cheam motorclub .. nice guy - really loves his rallying.

Longcross is still open as a test track but don't have a company name yet!
Having shot cars there every month for 10 years I can't stand the place, it is very useful for London based cars though.

Just to confirm, Longcross is back for now and if you want to see rallying close just outside the M25 then come along on the 18th of May and Marshal, sorry no spectators.
