Experience.

He'll never win the world championship but he has experience of a championship winning car and what a team needs to get it.

For a small team in it's infancy like Force India, this is invaluable.

I think it's actually quite sensible - whilst Fisi isn't by any means fast (and if he was kept by Renault or signed by Mclaren/Ferrari I'd be agog) he's a better option than a 20 year old pay driver who knows naff all about F1 cars and should bring the car home regularly.

Simple formula - Sutil for speed (allegedly) Fisi for experience.

At least they didn't sign Ralf....

Agreed - everyone was happy to slag off DC when he left McLaren but he's been the best thing for Red Bull, getting on with the job and moving the team forward.

I don't hold much hope that Force India will do anything more than Spyker or Midland but having an experienced driver with wins under his belt, teamed with a good technical director that he has established a working relationship with in the past, will be of great benefit to the team.

Good for Force India imho - They'll either do a bit better, or fail miserably. Make or break.

Going miles OT, but I had a Lock Stock moment when I read that: "Guns for show, knives for a pro".

Sorry, going back under my rock now...

Yep, agreed with everyone who said it's a good thing for Force India. Now they have one up-and-coming driver and one experienced journeyman. A good combo for a fledgling team.

Perhaps Force India will reach the success that Jordan have, and good luck to them!

I didn't realise this was common knowledge. In fact isn't it this Thursday that driver line up will be announced? Or have I missed something?

I think what devalued Fisi's currency the most was the number of times Renault chose to allow the broadcast of his pit team telling him to speed up.

Strange. Almost as if Renault were trying to humiliate him.

fisi is renowned for being unable to race flat out for the whole race and i think his team would be consistently trying to keep him "awake" biggrin He's not actually that slow over a lap but can't seem to put a whole race together - isn't he quite small, even for a GP driver?

Standards are slipping, gentlemen.

This thread has been running all day without mention that the said now back of the grid peddler is [Fisi] Very 'appy [/Fisi] to get a drive.

On a more serious note, good for the little chap. Always seemed an amiable chap and as has been mentioned, he has the experience of a top team that should help Force India and Sutil. I think Pit Bull Gascoyne is a fan as well.

As an aside, the Force India webpage, http://www.forceindiaf1.com/ is worth a visit. The embedded video is truly awful!

Fisi has been one of my favorite drivers because of his ability to occasionally get exceptional results in unfancied cars.

In his first year with Jordan he was robbed of a victory in Hockenhiem or Monza because of a puncture IIRC. Then remember his podiums (mostly in Canada I think) when Benneton were at their lowest ebb. His 3rd in Belgium '02 (50:1 at Ladbrokes, I won £250) and the incredible win for Jordan. And he walked all over Massa in '04.

Then came two years of being marmelised by Alonso and his confidence seems to have gone. Whether he was ever consistently good enough for a top team I'm not sure but he has a good record at mid-back field cars.

I'm going to stick my neck out here for chopping...I like him, the guy has pace but as mentioned he does appear to have lost confidence in the last few seasons but he has passion, wasn't it Jacques Villeneuve that he gave a rollocking to in the pits...priceless, wished more of them had that sort of personality, the sport would be far more interesting

He was good - but when teamed with Alonso - you could tell he just at a lower level - plain and simple. Lucky to have the drive.

I think I must be getting old
just remind me when he was ever good?

no doubt better than me but he has always had reasonable to good cars, and only ever did well when others did badly.

he may be "nice" but he aint paid to be nice!!

Remember this is the guy that hammered Honda ace Button for two seasons at Benneton Renault.

In the first season, when Button was inexperienced and the car was pants, yes. But IINM, in season 2 they were a lot closer and Button actually out-scored him. But they had already signed Trulli for the coming season so Button when to BAR.

Flav still rates Button as far as I know - he just said that there were too many contracts (referring to his ongoing Williams option)

Well, the car that Fisi beat him in was the same, so that is irrelevant. And why was he inexperienced having been driving for a year with Williams, qualifying as high as third on occassion?

Not sure what you mean here chum. I'm saying Season 1 at Renault to Fisi, Season 2 at Renault to Button. So what do you mean irrelevant? confused

As for experience, 1 season definitely doesn't make you an experienced F1 driver, not matter where you qualified the thing! The 2000 Williams was a fairly good car, Button had no experience of a crap car and therefore struggled.
