Renault boss Flavio Briatore has urged Formula 1 to follow GP2's example and introduce shorter races and reversed grids.

In an interview with the BBC, Briatore blasted the 'dull' nature of modern grand prix racing.

"We've never done anything for the show," he said.

"I believe our races are boring normally.

"For me, one hour and 30 minutes is too long because in 90% of the cases the last 30 minutes is boring - very, very boring.

"Every time there's excitement it's because something happens outside - heavy rain, some accident or something like that.

"I still don't understand why we don't try to make excitement in every race."

Briatore believes F1 should adopt the GP2 format of having two races of different lengths, with the top eight finishers in race one lining up in reverse order for race two.

"Maybe have one race of 45 minutes and one race of one hour, with a reverse grid in the second race like we do in GP2," he said.

"In GP2 it's working.

"People want to see people overtaking and fighting.

"If you put a quick driver behind, the quick drivers start overtaking, surely?"

The flamboyant Italian also advocates GP2's pit stop format, where tyres are changed but refuelling is not permitted.

"If you (just) change the tyres, you see the competition between the teams because you change in three, four seconds," said Briatore.

"Now it's seven seconds because of (waiting for) the fuelling and changing the tyres is not as spectacular any more."

Personally, I quite like the idea, and I have watched/followed F1 for some 30 odd years.

I agree 100% about dropping refuelling and stick to mega fast pitstops for wheel changes, though it would spice things up more if only one guy per wheel was allowed.

Just think, with the race split into two, ITV could never force adverts into the race ever again

Why you may ask?

Think about it, do you see adverts during the first or second half of a football match... NO. So they could not get away with doing it for the race could they...

The more me thinks about this, the better it gets...
