McLaren Race Car Sold Out For 2012

All 20 MP4-12C GT3 cars have now found homes, says McLaren

McLaren's new £310k MP4-12C GT3 race car (check it out in POTW action here) is sold out for the 2012 race season.

In order, it says, to provide sufficient engineering support to its customers, McLaren has limited its production of endurance race cars to 20 for the forthcoming season.

McLaren says it will bring F1 know-how to GT racing (citing a steering wheel that is "of the same design employed by Lewis Hamilton in his MP4-24 Formula 1 car" - though we're not entirely sure how relevant that is), and that its customers have been tempted by the "promise of no hidden costs and the opportunity to work with McLaren GT engineers throughout 2012 in developing the 12C GT3 to their own race specification".

All of which sounds ever-so promising. And if the car's pace in the races it has competed in so far is anything to go by, we can look forward to seeing McLarens at the sharp end of many an endurance race in 2012...

Sounds like an excellent package - to be able to work directly with the factory. Good luck to them, lucky bds!!

Nikasil of BMW engine ruining fame? I assume those problems won't apply in this application?

Anyway, sounds like a great car!

Must admit I'd love to see a resurgence in GT racing, IMHO it has so much more to offer spectators than F1 and they are made a lot more welcome at events. For far too long F1 has been the be all and end all of motorsport, well done McLaren.

audi race the R8 in GT3. they won the last 24h spa, a month ago with the support of the audi factory team and some audi official drivers.

the mclaren on the other hand didn't do so well : one engine replaced before race. one big crash due to a back marker on lap 2. the second mclaren took fire half way through and the 3rd, driven in the amateur class finished last.

their lap times wasn't bad. about 2 sec behind the audis, 1 sec behind the 458s, also in their first year racing (a bit more races done though)

You see? I'll bet that the McLarens were standarder than the Audis tho'.

Performed very well? I think McLaren will have quite some work to do to make it as good as an R8, GT3 RSR, 458 etc.
