We all know that a lot of time and money goes into running a rally team but it's not often we get to see exactly how much. Subaru has released a time lapse video of the 800 hours it takes to build an Impreza rally car.

Some people may be surprised to learn that the Subaru Rally Team USA starts with a showroom WRX STI and then strips it of everything. The engine is removed, along with the drivetrain, interior and even windscreen, before the car is fully rebuilt as a rally weapon.

I visited Pro Drive a few years ago. They go through an even more detailed build process.

Firstly they remove everything down to the bare shell, then the shell is put onto a special completely flat surface and jig and the chassis is then correctly aligned (they can be anything up to a few centimetres off square when the leave the factory). Once they have a straight chassis, the roll cage is fitted and alignment is checked to make sure that any welding has not distorted it.

I'm pretty sure the likes of ProDrive for the WRC spec cars would spend double the man hours on preparing their cars...

I visited M-Sport (Ford WRC) and they said they can spend up to 2000Hrs before the car is to homologation spec!

near the beginning, when the guy is pealing the protector off the bonnet, it takes him a bloody long time, looked like at least 0.50 (half an hour)

Don't forget that counter isn't counting actual hours - it's work hours. So if 4 people are working on the car at one time, that's 4 work hours in one 'real' hour.

I too was wondering why the hell they start with a factory spec car and strip it, seems a total waste of time. But then if that's what Group N requires, that explains that one
