Jaguar & Peugeot keen on SCV8

Two manufacturers want to be involved in the new super-saloon racing

The new SCV8 Supercar Championship announced last week is gaining momentum thanks to a positive response from manufacturers. Jaguar and Peugeot have already offered support for the series.

550bhp, V8 powered X Types and 406s could therefore be amongst the first cars to be entered for next year's races. The simplicity of the regulations should mean that manufacturers can get cars on track shortly after their launch, making the series a powerful marketing tool.

Peugeot UK Head of Motorsport, Mick Linford commented, “The SCV8 Supercar Championship brings a fresh approach to saloon car racing and is certainly a series that opens up new opportunities to manufacturers. The unique design approach also means that new models can quickly be introduced into the Championship which could add a special dimension to any manufacturers launch programmes, with the car being seen on track at the same time that it is introduced on the road.”

The new SCV8 Supercar Championship is well advanced in its development with the championship programming pending MSA approval in the near future.

Actually it sounds great to me. V8s should be a wee bit more spectacular than the FWD four pot wheezers we have running round in BTTC at the min.

...becuase it'd be quicker that the S Type R... and they wouldn't want a "lower" model to be quicker now, would they?

Its been resurrected (i ran a search for xv8r and had 1 hit in the last year - and that was in a thread related to f1 engines).

www.xv8r.com/

Now then, when will someone related to the BTCC realise that these things are cheap, and mad!

The trouble is that the BTCC know all about SCV8, hence it's difficult to get backing from the circuits and manufacturers.
The cars are built/designed/funded by Pete Hall and Andy Rouse (both ex Touring car drivers and entrants).
If it comes off it will be brilliant, Pete and Andy have loads of good ideas and the cars are fantastic (I only sat in the X-Type version about 12 weeks ago) and extremely well engineered and will be great if it comes off.
I think unfortunately a certain person at MSV has a similar idea and won't let his circuits be used (sounds a bit like F3!!).
Fingers crossed SCV8 will happen, proper RWD, powerful race cars, if only Dad were still here!!

We all ought to buy up the V8 star cars and have a "Gerry" Championship as a homage to your old man, Gregor!

This country needs big noisy fire-breathing RWD cars pounding round, door handles rubbing! That would fill the stands in a matter of 2 seasons. Let the MSA enter a Toyota Prius as a fop to the Greens and bleeding hearts in middle England.

...and get Plato to drive a (stock) Daihatsu Move as beanbag to kick about.

I cant see whats not to like about these things, relatively light weight, big power, rwd, its nascar with decent suspension!

A computer simulation company has just signed them up too, so at least it looks like itll take off "virtually" if not in real life. www.iracing.com/news.htm

Sounds fairly similiar in concept to the Aussie 'V8 supercars' series. www.v8supercar.com.au

Wouldn't it be great to have SCV8 and Aussie V8's mixing it up together at Bathurst? And everywhere else, world V8 touring car championship anybody?

Cheap... no.
The price quoted for a XV8R rolling shell is £195000

SCV8 hasn't been resurrected. The EERC (of Britcar fame) has started a new series known as the Dunlop V8 Supercar Challenge. It caters for all thing V8 (saloon/sports) including the SCV8's V8 Stars, DTM cars (with V8's), TVR's, Moslers, Saleens, old Thundersaloons, etc...

Next round (planned) is November 4th at Donington.

The last race was won by Phil Bennett in Nigel Mustill's V8 Star Opel Omega. The previous by Kelvin Burt in the XV8R.

Rob.

This SCV8 series fell flat on its arse last year. And the year before that.

No backing...no race series.

The guy trying to get it off the floor is dreamer.....

As Rob said, no-one is trying to get the SCV8 series 'off the floor'. Who and what are you referring to?

I think it's bit unfair saying (that arguably the best modern era touring car driver and engineer in Andy Rouse and an exceedingly good businessman who made millions out of ICS and is also a very good driver in Pete Hall) are both dreamers.

Yes, they have a dream, but it's a bloody good one and it's only people like TOCA and MSV that are stopping them. Why do you think Peugeot and Jaguar have agreed to it? They have absoloutely no links to TOCA and appreciate their racing heritage and the public's perception of their race cars.

Do you think a current BTCC manufacturer will get involved? Lets hope so, as that's what it needs, as yes it has fallen down in the past but sometimes the timing isn't right for these things but then how many people said A1 GP wouldn't take off? Okay, it's not F1 level but it's still done bloody well.

A capital plan from beginning to end. bounce

O/T: I was mucking about testing a V8 MGB in the week and got bored of leading a pack around so pulled into the pits, stopped and dawdled out to give chase, overtake them and pull away again. I seem to remember Gerry amusing himself in this way in races. hehe

Edited to add - I was testing at Mallory Park which is where I first watched Gerry in IIRC 1979/1980 - he made a big impression.

I wasn't alluding to Rouse etc.

The promotional package has been headed up in the past by Roger Etcell.

I take the point you are making but MSV wasn't around at the point that it failed the first time was it? We were still in the grips of Octagon!
