The horseshoe pass is lovely, and the drive to Llangollen down the other side is pretty cool too. Plenty of bends to scare yourself silly on. BTW...as you get close to Bala don't blink or you'll miss it. hehe Cracking road though and it looked completely empty. Nice pics thumbup

Well, following a very soggy walk up and back down Snowdon today I decided to do a few of the roads mentioned on here. The evo being a couple of them, now for a couple of pics:

It was a great drive, got stucj behind a couple of slower movng vehicles on the A road section of the triangle but soon dispatched them!

I just wish the weather wasnt as grey and damp and I wasn't so knackered. I might have managed another couple of runs!

Now to convince the mrs the Stelvio pass would be a good holiday....
Great pics and nice car wink

...but visibility not always the best!! hehe

I go over the Horseshoe every time I go in/out of N.Wales, I suppose if you’re coming from the south it’s a bit of an effort but coming from the M56 it’s the best option and a hundred times more interesting than the A5 way.

I took advantage of the clocks going back at the weekend, set off at 6:30 Sunday morning and did the usual route (Horseshoe, triangle, A4212) but also went for a bit of an explore. Never been here before, it was pretty wild up there...both the location and the weather!

someone tell me if I'm boring you...I'm a total road geek, I know! nerd

The horseshoe looks good - pity i'm in the south.

Is the GTI yours, or did you manage to hire one?

The Golf isn’t hired, it’s a family car that one. I've done 15k+ miles in it so know it well enough to get it moving properly so to speak wink The sheep/goats on the Horseshoe are funny little buggers, this was at the Ponderosa Café wanting my lunch recently.

Here’s an old pic of mine from winter 06, shows the view. Not sure if this pic is back in this thread somewhere but anyway...

Yeah the Horseshoe Pass is good. On a good day I go through it on my way back from work... (too dark now though!). It still seems like you lot drive it more than me!

I live about 10 miles from the horseshoe pass and spent many years going to school in Llangollen. I remember the days when going over the pass was "just" the best way to get to Ruthin on the coach to play footy.

Funny how when you are younger you never think that all the roads and the views so close to where you live are so iconic..I spent a few hours on sunday with a few other zed owners on the roads around Bala and they never fail to entertain.

I rekon pistonheads should get a subsidy from the Welsh tourist board- Bala, Llangollen, Betws y coed and the ponderosa are always rammed with people!

I don't recall seeing the picture anywhere in the thread previously (but here's a picture taken from pretty much the same place, and in better weather........) (Click on the image for a larger version)

Did it last Friday on the way down from the lakes and then stayed over and did it again on Saturday morning, awesome, awesome, awesome road! Was raining Friday, as you can see but perfect weather on Saturday. Forgot my bloody camera so these are from Mrs Dead's phone, apologies for the quality!

I will be coming back here again methinks!
The only downer of the whole trip was the cafe in Ruthin that we walked out of after waiting to be served (and indicating we wanted to be served) for 15 minutes whilst about 4 locals walked in and were served straight away!

Ruthin is nothing special and i have to say there are some miserable buggers there. I recommend getting onto the Ruthin road to Denbigh. There is a nice golfing hotel off there called the Bryn Morvidd, very nice indeed, and further along there is a nice little cafe near the church & cemetry, that does lovely cream teas and the like, very civilised. Or...go into Denbigh as it doesn't take long from Ruthin and they are a lot more down to earth. My daughter lives there and although she'll tell you it's a sh1thole the small shops and cafe/takeaway are OK.

We stayed in the Castle Hotel in Ruthin and it was actually really nice and the food was top notch, I'd highly recommend it (although Mrs Dead swears it's haunted!), as for the rest of the town...yeah just go to Denbigh!
