I would suggest the road between Rhynie and Dufftown, A941.
I love that road...

To those who know the roads around the aberdeen, insch, braemar, dufftown, cairn'o'mont(?), lecht road etc - they are awesome aren't they?!

I would add the A9+A99 stretch from south of Wick down to Dornoch bridge as my recent favourite

I work across north scotland and these roads are my daily commute!

I agree with that, being from Brora i grew up on those. Some fantastic roads up there anywhere you choose to go actually. It's only heading south after Inverness that the A9 becomes really boring. In fact i think i'll go for a blast now!

Thanks for the tips - I stayed over in Applecross on Monday night and drove past your place early on Tuesday about 10am .. the coast road was deserted at 9am but as we had such a lot of rain and torrential rain - it meant the roads were pretty slippery.

Still the scenery was superb.

Spotted a Chimaera in Applecross and perhaps the same car again in Aviemore.

I was in Applecross that Monday too, we took the hill road in, had a look in the campsite as a workmate was there with his renault modus, then to the inn for lunch, before heading north to gairloch on the coast road......which was even more fun as I could see more!

That coast road is even better than the pass IMO, you can see for a long way and relly enjoy its undulations.

Totally agree that the coast road from Applecross to Shieldaig is far more interesting than the mountain pass. It was exactly like Steve's picture above when I was there 2 weeks ago.

Most roads in the quiet bits of Scotland are great, far too many to list!

Just around me (Insch/Huntly) area there are dozens that are great fun. And they get better and better as you head North and West!

I spent a fair few weekends (pre-kids and when I had my VXT) just setting off into the countryside with a map, a change of clothes, a toothbrush and my wallet. Bloody great.

What is the chance of frost (west highlands) during October, second half? Trying to keep salt off the car from now on, but fancy a blast north too. smile

Very good chance of frost - although not right by the sea... travel inland a few miles and up a few feet, or in sleltered glens, and it's almost a cert.
