Road trip to Monaco
Discussion
Being huge F1 fans me and a mate are going on a road trip down to Monaco in september so we can drive and explore the Monaco Gp circuit in our 1.8 Focai..
At the moment this is the route I have planned down to Monaco and then onto the Col de Turini, the route home will be left open but my mate has said about going back via germany. http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&source=s_d&a...
I have done a search on the site but was wondering if people could post some links to maps showing where some of the other great roads in the area are located. Also if anyone could recomned any cheap but tidy accodation it would be much appreciated. We have at most 8 days to do the trip and would ideally like a whole day in Monaco.
Thanks for any help

I did a trip down to Monaco last year.
I took 3 days to get down there.
Day 1 was Calais to Reims. Just tell your sat nav to avoid autoroutes and it will find some great, very fast roads.
Day 2 was Reims to Dijon via the D996 which was the main route before the Autoroute. This is fantastic and easily one of the best roads I have driven. Its also very quiet with very little traffic.
Day 3 was Dijon to Grenoble on the autoroute and then pick up the Route Napoleon all the way into Cannes. Absolutely stunning drive. From Cannes its just a short hop to Monaco.
You can miss out Reims and just take autoroutes from Calais to Dijon if you want but its a bit dull and there are some fantastic roads in Northern France.

Thats a nice little route there, the Davos to Stelvio bit will probably be the highlight of the trip, fantastic roads, just make sure you take the 28, Fluelastrasse and Fluelapasse out of Davos, they THE roads you want, and if you follow that road along the Ofenpass is also great, its worth giving yourself as much time as possible that day so you can turn round and do it all again if you want.
If you can fit it in on the way back up through the Alps the Grimsel and Furka Passes are amazing, as is the little town of Luzern.
good luck, and if i can dig out my route from 2007 i'll post it up for you.

Chers for the help so far guys thats superb, would love to see your route
Deffo want to go to Reims as im a huge F1 nut and so will hopefully be able to visit the abandoned pit garages. Then as you say theres so many options over the mountains and its just a case of squeezing them all in
Alot of people ive spoken to think we are nuts doing this road trip as its so far. Plus they dont see the point in us taking separate cars but we both want to drive the great roads and I think chasing a mate or being chased on a road trip makes it alot more fun.

Sorry for jumping on this post, but seemed to make more sense than creating a new one just for me.....
I'm off to Monaco next month, and am looking at routes to get there from the Alps. I think i've found a great route, but not sure if its too long, or more importantly if its going to be scenic and full of decent mountain passes.
My proposed route:

Anyone done this or a similar route? i specifically want decent mountain roads and good scenery, so if this won't be provided by this route let me know and i may aswell take the motorways and spend more time in Monaco itself.
cheers

Well the ferry is now booked at 2pm on the 20th of September we leave British shores for Monty
As we are going in autumn does any one have a good b plan in case the Stelvio pass is shut as the snow a couple weeks ago has got me a bit concerned lol. Also can anyone recommend any cheap accommodation near Davos and Monaco?
Cheers for any advice.

Looks good to me. We were touring and the missus was tired of me having fun on the twisties so we travelled from Monaco to Chamonix via Torino. This was to travel via the Mont Blanc Tunnel. The A Road up to the Mont Blanc Tunnel is amazing and if you have seen the post on Pistonheads about the tightest corner on a motorway then you will have something to post on there after that!
To the left of your intended destination is a lake near Sainte-Croix-du-Verdon. Amazing roads around there and a good place for a day out if you want to chill in the sun and dip your toes in the lake.

Went to the Monte Carlo round of the World Rally Champs a few years ago and stayed in Menton (between Monaco and Italian border). Nice town and good value. Handy for Monaco by road or, if you fancy an evening out with a few drinks, catch the train. Also very conveniently happens to be at the bottom of the Col de Turini rally stage, which is an epic stretch of road with stunning views Longers
Cheap accomodation you ask?
here we go, this place in Davos was the cheapest i found last year, you get a 1 room apartment with kitchenette, bed, table + chairs and a bathroom. There's even a balcony overlooking the mountains.

this is where i'm staying near Monaco this year, not amazingly cheap, but the cheapest in terms of having parking and not being too far from the city.
Hotel Le Grand Cap – 173, avenue De La Plage, 06190 Roquebrune Cap Martin
We've paid £80 per room per night.
hope that helps

Its not looking good for the trip at the moment as my Focus is giving me loads of grief
Theres a knocking noise coming from the rack when I rock the steering from the centre to right. Theres no play but sometimes the steering will pull to one side.
Also the front suspension bottoms out on steep dips in the road and over certain bumps, especially with passengers in the car. its lowered 30mm on Eibach springs and ive already replaced shocks and springs once with no difference.
So after spending £800 on it in the last month (Tyres, tax, PAS problems etc) ive got to decide very soon wif im going to spend more money on it trying to fix the problems or try and find myself something newer with a maximum of 2k to spend. Not great when we leave in 4 weeks time!

Rode down on the Ducati in June, amazing place had a ride round the circuit quite a few blasts through the tunnel. For me the best day was going on the N85 amazing switch back hair pins, fast sweepers long straights better than the TT.
Agreed, the N85 - La Route Napoleon, is one of those 'must do' roads. Having 'done it' many times in both directions (on a Ducati as well, and in several sports cars), I thoroughly recommend it. The only downside is too much traffic when in a car, but this shouldn't be a problem in September (tends to be much worse in July/August)Have a great time!
Cheers thats great info as I was looking at maybe doing the route napoleon, though it could be difficult to add it into the Col De Turini, we will have to see how things are going.
What ive put into google earth is right isnt it?

I suggest you aim no further than Grenoble, aiming to arrive at your hotel late afternoon, allowing time for a well-earnt beer before a bath, and then dinner (there are sooooo many things to see on the Route de Napoleon).
If you need a hotel recommendation near Grenoble, I can help.
