I have to go to Cottingham near Hull next Wednesday for 10am. Travelling from SE London I'll go Blackwall Tunnel M11 and probably A14, A1, M18, M62. Google and sat nav say go via Lincoln, Brigg etc and over the Humber bridge. I don't fancy the Lincoln route as from memory there are too many roundabouts and single carriageway roads.
Would the M1 be better than A1? Will be leaving about 5am.

Thanks for the replies, it was a bit of a nightmare going up as the A1 was closed from just above Newark and we missed the A46 turn off as it is now a slip road to elevated roundabouts and from memory of the last time I was there it was a roundabout on the A1 itself. So we got caught up in the diversion and tried cutting across country but ended up behind a couple of artics going down lanes only fit for tractors and an hour to get about 3 miles and through Ollerton.

Coming back was easier, 3.5 hours as opposed to 5 going up, straight over the Humber bridge and M180,A15, A46 and A1.

I try and avoid the M1 whenever I can now, it's always busy at the best of times and once you get a breakdown or even small accident it's a nightmare.
