Quick update: 3.5hrs in the car yielded the correct bumper. Bit scuffed from storage but 'new' and everything intact and will be painted anyway.

Had a nice surprise waiting for me at Claremont Coachworks:



They reckon they are still ~3 weeks off but the front bumper is primed, the new wings and new bonnet painted and it looks great!!!

The answer to that would be a 'no'...

In fact, I haven't gone to a dealer for anything so far.

However, i'll tell you more when the front end goes together as i'm not 100% sure the wings we have are 'right' (though the old ones weren't bad so this was for time saving).

Busy this week with Mrs9 off (teacher) and seeing my (much smaller) siblings etc so there probably won't be progress for a few days as I guess everyone disappears for Easter after tomorrow.

Some more progress...

Think it will be 'finished' next week.

Had a bit of a nightmare tracking down a bonnet release cable.... and haven't.

Bought a Saxo and a 306 cable to see if one can work.

Managed to get a new window channel off ebay, which Peugeot no longer stock, so that was a win.

Anyway:









Engine bay with new crossmember - Next to get attention!



They're going to paint the rest of the plastic trim to match the bumpers, so it all looks good/ new.

Hmmm... Probably should have been building an engine!

First one has been on my watch list for a while but was 3rd choice between the brand new (which I wanted ideally) 306 cable, which is only £12 posted, and the 2nd hand Saxo cable... I might yet get it, though a GTi cable can still be had brand new but Mk.2 cables are different.

The thing is that it's only the very end fitting (engine bay) that broke so I reckon we'll be able to fix using one of the cables I've bought, at the very minimum. I am kind of hoping one might be fit and forget but we'll see.

I did order (and pay for) the 'correct' cable from Europe, new, with postage and everything at the slightly crazy cost of something like £70. However, they came back a day later and said they couldn't get one anywhere and refunded. I tried.

As for that bonnet; I believe that is my buddy Marc, who sold me the spare seats/ interior on this thread. I always check with him whenever I need parts. To be fair; I guess I also now have a spare bonnet and no spare cable LOL smile

Still have a number of ebay searches saved looking for a N/S window channel and the cable but I am thinking we can probably live with what we have.

Can't wait to get it home and get the engine and 'box out and do the rear beam. You'd think that was a weekend's work but I am sure I can spin that out for a few weeks/ months wink

It's tempting to pull the engine and 'box and send it back to the paint shop if anything appears in there. A bit frustrating/ waste of money (in terms of it being flatbeded) but it HAD to go when it did as we were moving house and it's not worth paying for someone else to pull them as the transport there and back isn't too bad.

Feel free to post pics here - The more, the merrier and all that!

Honestly can't wait to get it home but I've been so busy getting a new business off the ground I am not sure how much attention it will get (in one go).

Need to set aside a couple of hours 3x a week or something for the next few weeks.

Want it ready for when we get that week of summer, late August wink

Unexpectedly had to fly to Houston for a funeral and stayed to do some meetings so the updates have taken a back seat but this is where we are today!





Really impressed with the work Will and his team at Claremont Coachworks are doing! And they have got one of the 306/Saxo bonnet cable to fit/ work so i'll get more details on that when I'm home!

My thoughts exactly smile

I can't speak more highly of Will and his team at Claremont Coachworks!

I think it looks spectacular and I really prefer the shape to the Mk.2 cars.

I am starting to like the look of this more than a 205 GTi biggrin

I also think tracking down some NOS bumpers and lights and things really helped (and window rubbers/ guides).

there will still be the odd bit of trim I need to locate to get it to where I want it to be but the paintshop have done me proud!!

Yes, is the simple answer. However, I do think it looks good on these and they fill the arches.

White steels are definitely 'right' and these are only 1in bigger than Rallye steels and I prefer the design.

Oooooof! First rule of Peugeot rebuild club is that we don't mention the Williams. Second rule of Peugeot rebuild club...

It's all water under the (very expensive) bridge at this point. Best just to move on.

To be fair - The Clio V6 fills that Williams gap (though another Williams also filled that gap at the same time).

This is something that will hopefully be far more useable and used, with a much lower intrinsic value (at least to others).

Have a feeling I am going to love this, despite what will probably be many foibles, once it's finished!

It's like having a baby (but better, though not as good as my dog wink )

Sneaked over to Claremont as Bella needed more dog food and the two are, somewhat randomly, right next to each other:





Update on the bonnet cable: They got the new 306 S1 cable to work with very minor modification, so that's cool.

Update on the front wings: The pattern parts were rubbish and didn't align to any of the other panels so the originals (not rotten, we just thought new would be quicker/ easier) were pressed back into service.

Rear ride height will be sorted on the brand new beam once the 'Cup' engine (much lighter) is in and I can see where the front ride height settles smile

Thanks bud - Let's wait and see when it's on the floor and at the correct ride height.

They do seem like 'big' wheels/tyres and seemed to be 'taller' than the 15in alloy/tyre combo that came off, despite the same profile etc.

In the flesh; it doesn't look wrong as such. I'm open to changes once it's back on the road.

Thanks guys - Will have a poke around today and see what I can find. A quick ebay suggests you are right smile

It has had a brand new slam panel, so that would make some sense, though the wires look pretty chewed up, which seems odd as I am guessing there should be a plug on the end. At least we found it!

I might throw the badges on today and see how it looks. I know what you mean about it looking bare but I didn't mind it. Can always take them off again if I don't like it.

Will get some more pics when I have a poke around, later smile

Just been reading up about them. Would seem odd if the paint guys did anything to it (other than to unclip it).

The headlight wiring does look like it has been chopped about so I wonder if a previous owner has tried to eliminate the resistor?

There seem to be a few threads about getting rid of it on various Peugeot forums.

I could really do with a bit of a wiring whizz to take a look once the old engine is out and the new is in as there is the odd wire hanging about in the engine bay.

I have stopped counting... I find that's the best thing to do!

I'd be surprised if it'll end up costing me less than £8k.

Some of the big ticket items:

- Paint, bumpers, windscreen, various bits of trim, front lights, indicators, rear lights, fog lights, badges etc ~£4-4.5k
- Wheels, tyres, suspension, brakes ~£1k
- Engine(s), gearbox(es), Quaife ATB, exhaust etc ~£2k

Then there is the car itself, interior bits, bolt set, the odd sensor, services (e.g. injector cleaning, wheel bearing/ hub fitment), airbox(es), Quaife steering rack etc.

Yeah... I shouldn't have counted. Probably more like £9k, when all is said and done (including mods like 'Cup' engine, diff, cam etc).

And I was lucky with a fairly straight and rust-free shell. Though if it had had the right engine and 'box in good order, that might have saved £1k+.

What I can say though is that it is starting to look like my dream hatch! At least £8-9k no longer gets you a 205 GTi with as many minty bits as this (probably), though you can get an awful lot of car for that money... Nice Boxster, ropey 996, Scooby, Evo etc spring to mind!

Still - I'll love 'my creation' more than I would any standard car, I reckon, and I could probably have saved a grand or two here or there.

No point trying to spin it as something it's not... It's a vanity project/ labour of love.

I bought my 996 C2 for £20k, must have spent £10k+ on it and sold it for £12k at the 'low'.

This will represent much better value and cost far less than my Clio V6 has (supposedly) appreciated biggrin

One of those low miles 106 GTis currently advertised for ~£5k with ~£3k thrown at it could be very interesting without the need of a complete refurb and probably +50bhp over this.

I just have a thing for the S1 cars and an 8v screamer!

I'll have the insurance argument when it's ready to go for MOT...I suspect it won't be easy!

There probably won't be much progress for the next week or two as I'm off to Mallorca today and Oslo next week.

It's probably time to start stripping the engine bay of engine/ 'box when I am home biggrin

FWIW I think that's the cooling fan resistor rather than headlight. smile
Thanks Krikkit - I shall have a look.

Both cooling fan and light wiring could have got caught somewhere whilst being pushed around, so I'll check both.

Do you know where it sits?

Managed to track down some driving lights. One was posted and is waiting at the post office as I was out picking up the other one, when it was delivered.
