Project_5AXO - Reliving my youth!
Discussion
Hi all
It's been a really busy month on the Project, or not on the Project as it may be. I started a new job on 1st March so naturally I put all of my physical and mental effort into that, the Saxo took a slight back seat for a while. However, I did keep a few activities rolling along in the background too. Mothers day weekend saw the sprog disappear for a birthday party which meant I had a few hours to declutter the garage and fit some parts which I've been tripping over far too often. Also kept the plating tanks warm and plated a few bits n bobs along the way. I'll let the pictures do the talking.
My car is fitted with a Satchel Engineering Satchshift. It really is brilliant. It's powder coated as standard but it was peeling in places and starting to rust. This got the treatment;
Before
After
I also got both sides of the front suspension and brakes fitted for the first time. Those with a good memory will recall the passenger side lower arm was bent (from new) so I had to get my brand new vibratecniks mounts removed and fitted to a new arm. Bit of a pain but got round it in the end.
Also got the front brake lines made up and the HEL braided lines fitted. New HEL's went on as the casing was worn on the old ones. Rescued the old brake fluid reservoir too. It had a horrid chrome cover that was stuck on with tiger seal. Got it off without damaging it which has saved me searching for a new one.

I really should have filmed some of the above activity but it's nothing new that hasn't already been seen in some format already so I just cracked on and got it done.
Episode 26 of the YouTube series is due out today or tomorrow and it focuses purely on the gearbox rebuild. To say im delighted with how it turned out is an understatement. Thankfully, a very helpful mate knows these boxes inside out and offered to strip and rebuild it for me. I just had to do all the other bits like vapour blast the cases, zinc plate all the hardware and notch the casing for the larger gripper diff to go in.
So the gearbox went from this;

Stripped down
I had notched the casings to fit the larger diff housing of the gripper plate diff
Fitted a 3.9 FD to give an estimated 158mph top speed (rev limit tbd)
Got the casings vapour blasted
Got Sam to put it all back together using a complete bearing and seal kit. Literally every single item was replaced with new.

And the final finished product is this. BE4r, gripper diff, 3.9FD, plated everything, clean as a whistle and good for a few years of use.
That's another job done. It will sit on the shelf now until final install but its a major step in the project.
To see how the gearbox got that far, look out for Episode 26 in the coming days. [url]
