I had a Mercedes 190E 2.0 for my first car and paid £2k a year insurance. The car was much like this one - nice enough but not worth a lot.
I found out after about six months that a 3.6 litre (I think) XJ40 was half the price to insure. They are still very much cheaper to insure than my current motor - E36 328i - and I think it'll be doable.
Let's face it, all the other kids his age will reach 17, get a Fiesta on finance - £200.00 a month - and still pay a grand plus to insure it - £100.00 a month. So in terms of Bangernomics, he might be onto a winner if he can insure it for £3k.
The only worry is fuel. I can only hope that boy's full title is His Right Honourable Refinery Master The Shiek Kamil of Oilsborough...

Insurance may be steep but it may be suprising.
Posted in GG yesterday how even though I'm 21 and have been with RAC for 3 years paying ~£1500 on a 2.0L mondeo, they've suddenly decided i'm 'high risk' and they cant continue to insure me as it breaches their £5,000 threashold!
So im going onto a 2.6 V6 Audi A4 for ~£1,000
For me my 18y/o brother and both parents to be on the 2.0L mondeo it was £2100. For all of us on the Audi it was £2110 and for all of us on a 1.2 Corsa..................£3550
This Jag isnt you typical teenagers car so insurance could be ok

An update from today:-
I've finished cutting a piece of venner to fit the little bit that went crumbly. As it was the end of the lunch hour, my D&T teacher gave me some epoxy glue and said I can have a go at sticking it on at home. Pictures below:-
Awaiting glue~:-
With the new piece of veneer clamped down to dry:-
After 3 hours:-
Excess venner filed down:-
And as the filler had arrived a couple of days back, I started filling to make the surface smooth and ready for primer & paint.
And I made a start on sanding down the filler on the A-pillar:-

well done kamil ,independant thinking is so rare anywhere !
one tip , where you sand down the rusty patches ,you need to go out further ,to clean bare metal ,say about 10mm further than the rust ,and clean it right down to bright metal ,your filling it anyway ,and this will mean thers less chance of it all bubbling later . get an angle grinder with a coarse sanding disc if you have not got one .
regards

Fantasic thread Kamil, patience is your best friend here. Take your time and if any of it gets frustrating, leave it for a while and come back to it later.
I was 14 when I bought my first car with a friend - it was a 1968 Morris Minor which needed a complete renovation. It too had newspaper for rear sills inside the door shuts (a copy of the Thames Valley Trader - how apt?!) and it taught me a lot.
We also did a head gasket change which looked like a total scary nightmare, but on a 1000cc A series engine it was actually a doddle and took a couple of hours in total.
This thead is bookmarked. If you're not sure about something, ask the questions on here - there are plenty of people that will help you. Enjoy the car and don't worry about the costs, if you want something bad enough.. you will find a way

Brilliant! Oliver looks great!!! You'll be fine with the respraying, it's not difficult.
It's just time consuming - but you'll be used to that by the time you've finished sanding down all the filler/bodywork etc.
With the paint, there will be an incredible amount of polishing and buffing to get it flat and looking shiny.
Worth it in the end though. Keep it up!
