E28 - the long slog
Discussion
Updates would be good, wouldn't they
Nothing has happened recently, largely due to having very little free time, and what time I've had has been spent on the rest of the fleet, which are in active service.
However, that being said, I'm still plotting for this one. Currently got my eye on a diff, and later this week will be looking in more detail at converting it to R&P - not something I'd started out to do, but something has come up that makes it a good idea to look at.
Oh, and I should also have time to get some bits to the powdercoaters later this week - that's a key task in moving forwards too.

I can understand the appeal of going rack and pinion and lets be honest the best set ups are R&P but I'm not convinced that a straight retro fit will be a big improvement.
I've got an E28 528 and it has completely standard steering and to be honest I like it, its fairly quick, has a bit of weight and fairly good feedback. I would go as far as saying it feels better than the standard steering set up in an E36 (which is obviously R&P).
Also fitting a rack and pinion is obviously going to be quite a big change. If the kit is designed to go in an E28 and is set up with all the right angles, then great but if you are doing a diy transfer there is a lot to think about and sort out. Put it this way I hope you are good at geometry and possibly calculus!

Kinda.
Had a good look over an E28 that had been converted to use an E36 front subframe, struts, rack, hubs, wishbones etc. Basically the front crossmember had had the required E28 mounting points welded on, but the geometry was E36.
The benefits of this being the rack (and therefore the E46 Compact / Z3 4-pot racks) and the fact that an M50/52/S50 engine would bolt straight on, and with the standard sump.
I was bloody close to doing the same to mine, but have decided against it. There are still a couple of unknowns for me in the E36 conversion that would take a fair few ££££ figuring out, plus aside from some custom engine mounts, I've got everything I need to drop the lump into mine.
So it'll be staying E28.
In terms of work completed - not much. I've had the front subframe and brace powdercoated, and the rear beam re-powdercoated (it was originally done in gloss, and I wanted satin):
Next up are the two replacement rear trailing arms, and then it'll be re-assembly time.
But that's after Le Mans and various other trips. I have completed one other small admin task though, and bought a small van to lug the various bits around in
