No offence taken, ha ha. Nothing to report, wishbones not playing ball so still not fully removed.
If I'm honest the car has Taken a bit of a back seat as I've just bought a kart and just generally been snowed under.
Looking at getting out in may all being well.
The reason I don't have a full cage or side impact is a matter of cost and weight.
With a full cage costing at least £400 more than the roll bar, I decided I'd rather have a car with some protection out on track than a super safe car locked up in the garage.
There is no side impact protection in early mk1s as standard. I very much doubt the flimsy bit of metal that the speakers and window mechs bolt to would do you any favours in the event of an accident so no loss there.
Side impact doesn't really worry me. It's just a track day car and 99% of the off's are likely to be driver error and singe vehicle incidents. You're very unlikely to get T boned by another car and get cabin incursion that way. Sliding into the barrier sideways wouldn't be so bad as the load would be spread right down the side of the car.
Also, this car is a cheapy build, We stripped it to get move pace. Throwing in a weighty cage would negate that. I appreciate the benefits of the added stiffness but I still think the car would probably feel less lively with all that extra steel piping in it. I am under no illusions about te safety of the car but I'm happy with the current set up for now, it's certainly safer than a standard spec with all the benefits of increased power to weight, sharper handling, better braking, lower tyre wear etc etc.
Cheers!
