That has to be the best colour for these. I used to have a 306 DTurbo and always loved its performance sibling.

I couldn't live with the way those front wheels set far too far up in to the arch though so good to see you're fixing the suspension.
Yeh hopefully the extra ride height will inspire more confidence on bumpy roads. It's way too low atm.

Some engine bay/bodyshell pics.

Gave it a hoover earlier, it was full of leaves, nuts, bolts and twigs!

Generally it looks reasonably clean, can't spot any rust anywhere other than the odd spot of corrosion, to be expected for a 26 year old car.

This annoys me:

As does this:

For my asthma's sake, this arrived:

I will keep hold of the decat pipe though.

Yeah I'm not really sure what you're comparing them to there, Fiesta RS Turbo? Sunny GTi-R? Golf VR6 maybe? It's certainly not stone-cold last in terms of 0-60 and round a track I'd say the 306 has most of them beat.
The ad was a joke, I believe it was referring to the GTI-6 being the slowest car in the class of 6-speed performance cars.

I fitted a lovely XU10J4RS in my Peugeot 205 GTI back in the day. Such a great engine, and made a great noise with a decat + cone filter in my 205. Never smelt very petrol-y either but maybe i just didn't notice as the car was a pre-cat car anyway so the old engine would have smelt similar?
Mine is very strong in terms of petrol fumes. Not nice.

I bet that absolutely flew with 300kg less weight!

In other news, I've ordered a non-broken fuel flap that will hopefully stay shut, for the princely sum of £35.

Pics from seller (yuck).

Hockey stick clip wink I expect Peugeot do still sell and they only used to be a couple of quid but be forewarned that the spares desk in a Peugeot dealership is staffed exclusively by antagonistic argumentative morons who's job it is to not sell you things so it's a complete waste of time finding out the part number because they'll just tell you it's wrong. Or that your car didn't come with those.

Your window and possibly central locking is probably the crappy cables in the rubber sheath between the door and the bodywork breaking up because they're too short and made of some kind of Fromage. The right way to fix it is to strip the rubber back and re-solder everything that's broken.

Having stripped out a couple of 306's I'd take off the interior rear quarter trims around the rear seatbelts if I were you. They like to rot there and you wont know anything about it until the seatbelt makes a bid for freedom. Check the jack points in case some helmet has squashed them with a trolley jack and split the underseal which will encourage corrosion.

Great cars generally and actually built quite well compared to some of the more modern toss I've owned!
Thanks, I'm weighing up whether to go to my usual family mechanic or a specialist who's a bit more expensive but has worked on these before, to sort these niggles out.

Your car shouldn't smell that strongly of petrol just because it's missing its cat.

I'd check the fuel lines for leaks, and make sure that the gasket on top of the fuel pump (assuming it's under the rear seat) is sealing properly.
Thanks, this is top priority to fix, followed by thermostat then stock springs on then brakes then electrical niggles.

Stat, stat sensor and trim restorer have arrived:

It's amazing how good they look over 2 decades on. IMO the proportions are just right for a little hot hatch.
Yeh and all the little details, like the black trim on the fuel flap, all seem to work together.

Eibach stock height front springs have arrived. Apparently the rear is adjustable to need so find out what the stock setting is for the rear to match the new front height.

Maybe running a bit rich due to the thermostat? Can you check the lambda sensors via a code reader to confirm all is well from that pov?

My 996 stank of petrol with a decat but the 205 was always pretty smell free. It was a little rocket up to 100mph for sure!
Could be that yes, it took ages to warm up yesterday so maybe it's running cold. Something is up.

While expensive at £18/bottle, I've been recommended this stuff.

For the faded plastic:

It appears to work a treat:

It's really good stuff, will do the rest of the car once the weather improves.

In other news, I decided to return the greenstuff pads and go with y'all's advice, and ordered this lot instead:

Which reminds me I need to find some decent brake fluid.

I enquired about ITBs and cams earlier, which would cost £6k inc. installation and manifold. Sadly waaay out of my budget, but I'd imagine these would be huge fun with that induction sound and an extra 40 bhp.

Perhaps something to consider if values creep up, then it could be more justifiable.

If it's compatible with your car (which I'm sure it probably is) ATE Typ200 brake fluid will give you more heat resistance than OEM stuff.
Thanks I've heard about that stuff, will most likely go for that.

Fantastic, OP! The handling and ride compromise on these is verging on witchcraft. Absolutely stonking chassis.

Look forward to seeing this progress smile
The chassis is amazing!! Waay better than my old Ph1 172. In that I could never tell how much grip there was available, not much feel.

The current tyres are awful so looking forward to having a decent set on.

I remember when these were new and thinking that they're such great looking cars. In your case, also in a great looking color.
They're pretty unique and very late 90s. Also pretty vast inside with the rear seats folded down.

Ordered this brake fluid:

Also sourced a new cambelt cover and right electric wing mirror as the current one keeps folding inwards, I guess the spring is broken.

Need to find some bolts for it.

What is the state of the rear beam bearings? I know the design is very similar to my old 205 and the bearings for the stub axles were pretty temperamental and known to fail. Definitely worth checking if you can. Chambered rear wheels and squeaking were signs to look out for from memory.
No squeaking or chambered rear wheels, but will ask my mechanic to have a good look over things like the axles and bearings. There's a fair bit of steering wheel vibration at high speed which I suspect is tyre balance. They might have some blebs in so perhaps it's due some fresh tyres. While it's cost £60 ish to get the tyres fitted I might as well spend the extra £140 and get the wheels shotblasted and powdercoated, and supply the fresh tyres, which I'm thinking TR-1s.

Just arrived:

Pug's been off the road for over a month now, and since taking a look underneath, it's clear the chassis needs some upgrades. So, been waiting for parts, which have now arrived:

Eibach springs 15mm lower than standard, plus some new driveshaft cover things:

Bilstein B4 dampers:

Imaxle refurbed rear axle:

On the lookout for a set of tyres too, not sure which brand to go for.

Managed to sort the locking issue, and the alarm has stopped going off. Still struggling to find the source of fumes coming into the cabin though.

If I can get it sorted and driving nicely, I may treat it to a full respray after a year or so. If it behaves!

I wouldn't have gone to them for an axle personally, but it's a bit late now.

I've just stuck some Kuhmo HS52 on my 406 which is similar tyre sizes, can't fault them, feel far better than the old Dunlops it was on.
I called around a few other places and they were quoting 3x the amount. I know the founder of Imaxle and they offer a 2 year warranty, and their product page seems very thorough. Their reviews are really good as well. Thanks for the tyre recommendations guys, hmm.

Hopefully the car will thank you for spending that money!

15" is a really tricky size to find great road tyres in. If I recall, aren't OEM sizes something weird like 195/55, which isn't a common size either?

I suspect your best bet is to suck up the few % discrepancy in the speedo reading, drop to 195/50s and fit Pilot Sport 3s.
I do hope so.

So far, project costs are as follows:

Car £2200
Wiper blades £7.69
Motul RBF600 Brake Fluid £26.25
Mintex front and rear discs and pads £148.62
Trim restorer £15.99
'6' side badge £7
Axle refurb £205
Eibach front springs £154.97
Bilstein B4 front dampers £206.32
Driveshaft covers £21.60
Yuasa HSB013 Silver 12V battery £108.99
Thermostat and sensor £50ish

Grand total: £3152.43

Other than that, tyres I guess will be about £200ish.

Really wanted one of these back in the day, had a saxo vtr and then vts instead. Passed my test in a 1998 306 dTurbo.

Probably doesn’t feel that fast by modern standards?
D Turbos were epic machines. Bet your VTS was fun. I had a Mk1 VTR with a VTS lump dropped in, around 2009. Stripped it out and it ran a 6.35 0-60 at Trax Silverstone.

I've gone from an E55, to a 535d, to an E60 M5, to a 1-litre iQ in recent years, and the GTI-6 still feels fast, just got to work to extract the performance. The M5 and E55 were way too fast for a b-road, the 535d was just about on the limit. I think with the chassis refresh, the 6 should become a real hoot to drive.
