I fancied a change from my standard Euphonic mats and I liked the look of all the MK1 Roadster style ones. I browsed Ebay for cheap mats and saw some standard Eunos Roadster mats for a decent price. Only thing was the picture for them wasn't the best but I thought I could make out they were in decent nick but dirty.

When they arrived I could see that they weren't just dirty, they were filthy and probably never saw a hoover like ever! I put them in the sink with a load of washing up powder and a hand brush and the water was BLACK! But turns out they were in great condition:

They are wayyy thicker than the mk2 mats and have a plastic backing to them so my heel will never wear through. I'm well impressed with them. I know a roadster badge is missing but one is on the way courtesy of a nutzer.

My rear nearside brake was also binding and I took some time off work to try and get them done, half way through with the brakes in bits I realised Eurocarparts gave me the wrong pads, and they didnt have any big brake pads for the forseeable future! I had to put them all back together and go to my local motorfactors who had them in within the hour. By now I was fed up of the brakes and also had no time myself to sort them so a trip to my dads friends garage and he did them including re-greasing for a few beer tokens, although he said never again as the caliper was well and truly seized to begin with giving him a massive headache.

Ah well the rear brakes are done now, although its just boggo pads and pagid discs I dont do any track work and with the big brake setup they stop well, and the car seems more sprightly thanks to not binding anymore.

Another quick update to get back to present:

Parked next to this behemoth at Tesco

Went to London and was staggered to see the price of this.. Could buy a decent mk1 for that!

Was cleaning out my room and found the tabs from my old fuji diff. What a pile of turd that was.

I saw a JDM Y0000!!!111!! Runabout fuel lid on ebay advertised as being for a mk2. Bought it, but it was a bit dirty. Nothing a couple of baby wipes couldnt sort out:

Fitted it and its not a great fit, its got a gap down one side. Im not sure whether they even did mk2 runabouts, I cant find anything about them on google. So that got sold pretty much straight away as I think it was for a MK1. I bought and fitted some Ford Maverick washer jets, much better spray pattern than the original Mazda ones, especially my passenger side, the original ones dribbled water out like a 90 year old man with a Prince Albert wheras the ford ones its a nice even mist-type spray. I also finally ordered a cambelt and waterpump kit(cost only circa £50) as I am slightly overdue a change. Although the engine is non-interference I dont want to get stranded!

The front nearside caliper might also be sticking, as that wheel is harder to turn than the rest and there is a slight pull to the left, it is the only caliper that hasnt been greased up or replaced since I bought the car so once that's done I hope to Christ they wont need doing again for a while.

A few of the bits to fit - including a sticky front number plate:

Dads mate fitted cambelt and water pump for me as I wasn't confident doing it on my own with questionable tools, but he forgot to plug the fan in again, which I only realised when stuck in traffic a week later on the motorway and I noticed the water temp near the top. Pulled over, let the car cool down, and took it easy on the way home. It was only under torchlight at home I saw the problem. Despite that I was pretty pleased at how the car ran once the belt had been put on, engine feels a bit more willing.

Went to fit the sticky number plate, what an absolute ball ache due to the curvature of the front of the car:

I realised as I stepped back to admire that I had put it on a few degrees wonky. At first glance though you cant really notice. I tried taking it off to adjust but it started to tear so I have left it for now, and will get a bodyshop to put a new sticky plate on once they have filled the holes.

Speaking of bodyshop, I took my car to a Nutzer's bodyshop and had him have a look at my rust, and asked him to pay particular attention to the chassis rails. Luckily, there is minimal rust, no bubbling there, and he is confident a grind back, anti rust treatment in the box sections and spray will stop any serious rusting for the forseeable future. Obviously my sills are bubbling but overall he seemed quite impressed at the lack of rust on my 2.5 compared to some others he have seen. I have asked everyone in my family for money towards getting the car sorted for Christmas and my birthday in January, and as I have drawn the short straw in work again and am working all through Christmas and new year I should have some Public Holiday extra pay to put towards it.

That area around the chassis rails in the engine bay was filthy due to the horrible weather so one boring afternoon I took the air box area apart and got rid of all the muck..apart from a bracket and the usual power steering reservoir there was no exposed rust.

Saw a tidy MK1 in the work's HQ's.. if this is anyones let me know

Also had a road trip to the south coast with my brother in law to pick up a tidy mk2 Sport. Had a quality, high speed sunset drive back up the A34 which was brilliant. Unfortunately he's had to try and sell through no fault of the car, its still for sale if anyone is interested.

Car looks fantastic, good read. Nice too see someone else doing a few bits here and there smile

I went for the self adhesive plate too and got it on perfect luckily. Mine has creased up quite a bit though in the centre. I'm thinking of ditching it and going for an offset one but can't find a bracket to buy for a 2.5.

If you don't mind me asking, how much was your new LSD? I'm thinking of raiding the rust repair budget for an LSD but not sure of the prices.
Thanks a lot man, means a lot. Still got a bit more updating to do involving attacking some evil rust, but just been the Gym and Im ready for bed!!

I dont like offset plates, it offends my sense of symmetry, and the stick on's are retro cool. There are a lot of brackets out there, many for a MK2.5, have a search on MX5 Nutz Im sure you will find some.

The LSD was bought from Nutz second hand from a 1994 Eunos from memory.. It came with brand new diff mounts and the driveshafts as well. It was just shy of £300 delivered which is a bit better than the going rate considering the diff mounts and shafts. I sold the shafts as well. I had to pay to get it put on and I stupidly left the old diff at the garage, Im sure someone would have had it for £50. I neglected to replace the driveshaft seals as they looked ok, but one started leaking so it was a bit more expense for a replacement to be fitted. Worth it though and although it is a bit of money, you only live once!
