911s? I think 996s have been discussed on the PH front page within the last fortnight so there's probably loads of stuff on them in that thread. There's also a bit by Frankel on the Motor Sport magazine website about 911s and how 996s weren't as well put together as previous iterations, it also talks about likely future values etc.

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

I thought page 14 about values and supply and demand and some of it reading a bit defensive and touchy was amusing.

I don't know that much about 911s or Boxsters as they're not really suitable for me.

And before you buy a 996 please have a read about IMS and RMS issues. I know every car has it's problems but they are very documented on the 996, reason for them being so cheap.

Maser would be my choice, have you heard a 4.2 with a sports exhaust smile

OK tomorrow is... viewing Maser 3200 and 4200, Carrera 4 (996) and a Brera V6 Q4 all around £12k with the Breara at £7.5k. I've looked at insurance and the Brera and Porsche come fairly close with the masers coming about about £150 more. Nobody has really mentioned the Carrera yet... any opinions?

Cheers
So how did you get on?

I only realised last week that the Prodrive Breras are FWD. Nothing against FWD, but chopping out the 4WD for whatever the benefits seems a bit odd. Imagine Audi asking Lotus to develop one of their cars and Lotus ditching the Quattro bits?

Can't just put good looking girls on the bonnet to try make it look good biglaugh

But I agree the Brera is a great looking car, especially the front splitter on the black one. However, I feel you've pushed it into a higher league of cars. Definately go for the Maser 4200!!

Update... snow stopped play... didn't get to view and pretty pointless test driving powerful RWD cars in snowy conditions! Upodte TBD!

The 996 I'm looking at is a later 3.6 Carrera 4 are they as potentially problematic as the 3.4 ones???

Cheers

You believe everything you read? Try one yourself. I'm on my 2nd & love it. Could do with going on a diet but ten so could I.

If a DB7 pushes your buttons, the Wheeler Dealers one would almost certainly be a great buy.

China really goes to town on the cars, bringing them up to a mechanical standard that no other garage ever would for the same sale price (simply not economically viable, as Ed's labour costs and expertise are never factored into the restoration/modification cost)

The boomerang lights were only ever on the 3200 (twin turbo V8) The 4200 has the naturally aspirated (and more powerful) Ferrari V8 based engine. The common concensous is that the 42 is less trouble than the 32. My 42 has been great!
yeah but the rear lights on the 32 are so much nicer - I wonder if its possible to put them on the 42
