Citroen BX 1.9D 'The Estate' - Barn Stored to Bahn Stormer?
Discussion
Nearly a monthly update - so far the estate has covered around 450miles since returning to the road. No issues to report since the last update, and economy is now around the 43mpg mark average, which is literally just urban driving, though it did venture out of Fareham on a brief trip to Eastleigh last weekend. Big stuff, I know!
No oil change No cambelt change
It's still going....in fact it feels like it's driving better than it ever has! Last weekend of August sees a Citroen Rally in Stratford, so my plan is to attend to the cambelt and oil change (and radiator leak) before then and take it along.
So far, doing well. Only issue is I have too many cars on the go at the moment, so something needs to come off the road. It'll either be this or the red 16v BX I have, but for now the estate is doing sterling work

43mpg?
My old BX1.9d estate used to hit the high 50s. Which by coincidence was about its 0 to 60 time. Oddly after an extremely long time it's wobbly speedo would show well past the 100 mark.
I swear someone used to put fuel in it when i wasn't looking. Shame back then, (90s), nobody had thought of chucking chip fat in them, would have been even cheaper. Was around 250k miles when it was sold off and smelt a bit iffy having been used to deliver second hand washing machine for quite a while.
Top work anyway, do give her some fresh oil though, not many left now.

Worth noting that 43mpg is all-urban driving. No XUD in the world will do high-50s around town. How well it is on a run I'll have to find out once I've done the belts! My old BX1.9d estate used to hit the high 50s. Which by coincidence was about its 0 to 60 time. (along with the oil change)
SHOCK NEWS JUST IN:
Estate gets maintenance!
Hmmmmm.....
Turns out the brakes are in advanced stages of wear:
(They do creak a bit come to think of it! Still stops on a coin, but new discs/pads may be required, not to mention a clean up of the piston and a new seal!)
Coolant equally mucky as oil:
And was a handful of miles from being ejected from the engine of it's own accord too:
Took the opportunity to start changing the cambelt. Autodata reckons 2.1hrs. bkS IS IT!! I still haven't finished it, the access is just so bad!
Oh, and an alternator belt which may have seen better days:

It was an absolute bh to do, and the really depressing thing is that even though it was last changed in 2002, it was actually in pretty good nick. Reckon it could have done another year, maybe two!
Not the drive belt though. I'm amazed that was still in one piece! Also changed the radiator for a used one I purchased on eBay at the same time, so now we have fresh oil, fresh cambelt and no coolant leak! Cooling fan even kicked in too!

Good for another ten years now!
Do you think it might be a good idea to change the oil and filter again in 500 miles seeing as it's not been changed in eons?
only if he pours the "barely used oil" in the tank Do you think it might be a good idea to change the oil and filter again in 500 miles seeing as it's not been changed in eons?
shoestring running does not allow for such extravagance!
(although its a prudent point, and I agree)

Last night I got to drive the old girl on the road again for the first time in about 7 years. The interior still smells like the barn and the new seats are not a patch on the 16v seats that were in it. There is no radio, the gear linkages are fked and you cannot depress the clutch entirely for fear it might explode. Despite this I still really enjoyed it. Maybe its nostalgia, but its a smooth, comfy and relaxing. There is no need to hurry it, and even if you wanted to you couldn't. I didn't even take it over 60 despite driving down the M27 at 10pm.
I love it.
I love it.
