Toyota GT86 - Owned
Discussion
Got the call yesterday morning - all done.
New bottom end supplied and fitted. Battery was also replaced under warranty. While the engine was out I also had a new clutch and spark plugs, effectively free of labour charge.
New engine and clutch plus transmission fluids and the new billies installed a couple of months ago, it feels like a new car - including having to run it in again.
2.1/2 hour drive back home was uneventful, ran well.
Now have to decide whether to keep it... I've lost a little faith, but still love the car.
Happy Christmas to me!

Good news. Did they pinpoint the cause of failure?
Not really. The paperwork just reports bearings and cylinders scored, nothing more.Yazza54 said:
Great stuff, I assume your warranty on the engine effectively starts again?
Heh. Not quite. New parts come with one year warranty, so at least it takes me past September when the five year warranty will be up.LordGrover said:

New parts come with one year warranty, so at least it takes me past September when the five year warranty will be up.That one year warranty may be very valuable - I've seen several posts reporting failures of replacement short blocks within the first few hundred to thousand miles. I guess the clean up and repair is a job that needs to be done very thoroughly.
What would concern me is that there doesn't seem to be a good explanation as to why so many (anecdotally) of these engines have failed in apparently the same way. These failures seem to affect standard, re-mapped and modified cars.
I could understand if the failures were linked to remaps, perhaps due to poorer knock management or the higher rev limit, but apparently standard cars are affected too. Given the target market(ing), I'd expect an engine of this type to shrug off regular hard use, provided it is serviced to schedule and oil levels remain above the minimum on the dipstick.
I'd like a GT86/BRZ at some point, so hopefully these issues will eventually get solved a la Stag / Dolomite Sprint / K-series etc.
Incidentally, I notice the BRZ now comes with a five year warranty.

Sometimes I feel like the only GT86 owner who has to battle with dealers over Warranty fixes! I'm glad I'm not the only one. Really disappointed with how my GT86 is put together, and all its niggly faults. Detracts from an otherwise fantastic car. If it wasn't so damn good to drive, I'd have got shot of it by now!

I'm thinking of moving mine on and coming back to one when they're at sub £5k track toy level. Still easily one of the most fun cars to drive I've ever owned. Selling soon has it's positives; new engine and clutch with fresh one year warranty, and there's eight months of original five year warranty remaining. It also has pretty much new Bilstein B14 coilovers and an ECUTeK licence (though no custom map) which may be seen as a positive to some buyers. Selling later with little or no warranty remaining will likely not be as sellable.
I have the modified AVO turboworld 2.1/2" cat-back exhaust and TD UEL manifold to sell separately as they are no longer fitted. I'd probably re-fit the stock wheels and sell the OZ Racing Ultraleggera.
My head and heart say sell, but the question remains; with what to replace it? It's an awesome car and I genuinely love it. It's a bit like being married to Michelle Pfeiffer and discovering she's been shagging the hired help - still everything she was before, but can you trust her not to do it again?
If I do sell I'll be looking at something a bit more languid and lazy, something I can live with without/less fear of being unfaithful. So switching Michelle for the girl next door - BMW Z4, Mazda MX-5 or maybe a classic older model (MILF) E31 850.
Dunno... still pondering.

Those beemers will be unfaithfull for sure... n/a Supra could be a one option, but it needs to be a tidy example (good suspension) to be a fun car. And it needs a little bit of more maintenance than gt86 of course. But old 2jz is better engine than subaru source f4 and that was for me the biggest reason why i didn't go to gt86 route. I think it is powerful enough as an engine, but maintenance is somehow difficult and a reliability is unknown. Still, i don't believe that it will blow up again.I have the modified AVO turboworld 2.1/2" cat-back exhaust and TD UEL manifold to sell separately as they are no longer fitted. They aren't that bad!get rid before they depreciate to nothing??

If it turns out FA20's are chocolate, upgrade parts to improve reliability are already on the market, rods, pistons etc...
Rotaries are witchcraft to alot of garages, wheras a boxer is a known quantity.
If my motor dies out of warranty it will either get upgrades or swapped out.

Don't go thinking bigger and more powerful will mean more fun. I seem to be grabbing the keys to my GT86 much more than my Evo 6 for a Sunday morning blast.
New Mx5 RF looks interesting?
Went for a test drive in the MX-5 RF today, 2.0 litre.New Mx5 RF looks interesting?
As a 'purist' I'd've preferred the 1.5, but after driving the 2.0 I was convinced the 2.0 litre is spot on. It's a fantastic car. Much more grown up than the Toyota and a real pleasure to drive.
FTR, the PCP deal is very competitive.
If I'd not already bought a replacement, I'd buy the RF without a second thought.
