Agree with melvster, The VXR isn't terrible, it's just the RS is awesome!

I have VTEC y0! I like the idea of a 'Teg but I don't get the hatred of Vauxhalls. I have always had a soft spot for the brand and my family have had a fair few. They are even more reliable than the Jap cars we have had. The Focus RS is lovely, but starting to age with a slightly Essex interior. Jack, save up for a Mk2 Focus RS (in green). Sorry Patrick for going off-topic.

Now back to your lovely Polo. smile

£1740 is what I would expect...but, more often than not, I see people on this forum who are aged 20 and younger who drive 330 bmw's and porsches who have insurance less than a grand. It's crazy.

What is the Polo 1.2 like to drive? Is it pretty reliable?

To be honest, I was overjoyed to find that quote, after weeks of finding nothing but £5k plus quotes it was getting demoralising!

I think it's a nice little car to drive, you can feel the limits of grip from the front tyres in the dry (different matter completely in the wet)

It has very bouncy, soft springs as standard to it rolls about quite a bit, limited feeling from the steering.

The seats have very little support so I find myself falling out of them quite often!

The engine does well, starts to run out of puff at 4500rpm (6000 limit) but no matter how much stick you give it it will always return 30mpg minimum with 45 average and 55 on a run.

Apart from these small things the car is a hoot to drive, very simple but fun.

Just to give some warning id read up on spare part prices ( and how many spares there are left ) for the mk1 focus rs. I have friends with them and theyre not cheap when stuff goes wrong....

Also insurance wise, im guessing your around 18/19 youre going to be seeing minimum of £4k insurance for any of the above. I only paid £1400 a year when i got my st at 20, only pay £800 now with a whole host of mods.

I could have had my first car by now as my sister had her Fiesta, but I didn't like the colour so I turned it down. She then got the Civic. I will be behind the wheel of my own car before 2013 though as that is my goal. I am currently taking lessons in a 1.5d Renault Megane.

Regards melvster, I have lost the race to get the first car but I will no doubt get a PH sticker on before him. hehe

Bit of an update, after almost 10 months driving this beast I have covered nigh on 10 thousand miles, £1540 in petrol, running a drunken woman over and many trips around North Wales, has it been worth it?

Christ !

I've done circa 6.5k in 1.5 years driving...... Probably spent 3 times that on fuel though :hehe.

Sounds good! I'll hold you to both of those, own car in 2013 and PH sticker before melvster!

Good to see a group of non chavy young lads enjoying non chav'd cars on real country roads! Far too many people seem to modify average euro boxes when they are more often than not far more fun standard and that money spent on useless modifications can be used on fuel.... this is pistonheads, its all about the driving and not the posing right!

Well done for being a proper Pistonheader and making the most of what you have got (not that its bad, its a bloody decent first car in my opinion)!!

When i was 19 (im only 24 now) I had a 1.8 Vauxhall Vectra Estate! No pose value but was way quicker than all my mates cars and the fact i didnt worry about it much meant Devon & Cornwall had never experienced a boring estate car being enjoyed and thrashed everywhere so much!

BTW, I know insurance has gone up but 1740 seems bloody steep?!?! Who are you insured with? I could never beat the "Admiral" group? When I was named or even now on my own policy. I used to pay 400 quid on the vectra as a named driver and i think my first car, a 106 1.5d was marginally less as a named driver.
