When the 4.6 sport first launched I blagged one from BMW for a month as a demo for my next co car – fantastic fun, but a drink habit that would make Gazza blush!
I agree re the exhaust note, foot to the floor and the growl was addictive, in fact even crawling along in traffic it was quite audible. I also remember the performance and handling being fantastic for such a huge monster of a car.
One lasting memory I have was about a week after BMW delivered it was everything electrical related stopped working, no TV, no computer, no ‘leccy seats – nothing. Too it back to the local BMW garage and a nice Gent in a white overall sat me in reception, got me a coffee and a bun and took the car into the technical area. As I peered through the viewing area window I watched him take the boot trim apart and remove a big silver box, then put it on his workbench and walk off. About ½ hour later he returned, put the silver box back in the boot and put all of the trim back together – seemingly having done bugger all to the car. As he handed the keys back I asked what was wrong, and what the silver box was..........?
Turned out the silver box was the ‘brain/computer’ and it needed to be left unplugged for 15 mins to completely power down and re-set itself, in essence he re-booted my X5!!
Why didn't he just disconnect the battery? I agree re the exhaust note, foot to the floor and the growl was addictive, in fact even crawling along in traffic it was quite audible. I also remember the performance and handling being fantastic for such a huge monster of a car.

You sure that it wasn't induction and engine noise rather than exhaust?BriC175 said:
I don't think it's beyond BMW to make their cars sound good as standard. I've had people comment that my M5 sounds very nice, and that's 100% standard engine and exhaust wise.
Granted, it does sound nicer with a backbox delete...
But it's also an M5....Granted, it does sound nicer with a backbox delete...
And again, how much is induction and engine noise vs true exhaust noise?
for example my 3 cylinder Roadster sounds really really good in standard trim and it's all engine noise. The stock exhaust is near to silent, event at 6000rpm (proven by standing next to while car was dyno'd).
I think this is factory, not the best vid but taking ages to find standard cars..

Which obviously is in the 1%....300bhp/ton said:
If it sounds like 99% of all mass production V8's, then it won't be sounding at it's best, or does it use some form of active exhaust?
Or put it this way, anything this side of a Ferrari or TVR with a stock exhaust will not likely be sounding amazing.

As it struggles up to 70 on a dual carriageway, probably screaming for dear life as it has almost managed top speed!!for example my 3 cylinder Roadster sounds really really good in standard trim and it's all engine noise. Those cars make me laugh
