This car comes from a time when having a Mercedes actually meant something. Amazing car.

Pictures please, I love these cars. It's simple in the way that an old house has everything you need and is more comfortable than a gadget loaded soulless new build which has thin walls a is built to a budget.

How's the w126 going? Done many miles? Many teething problems?

I ask because I've just bought almost the same car on eBay, 89 300se with 54k, only difference it's blue!

Hasn't been used more than a few miles a year so if I start using it when the weather picks up I expect to have a few issues to raise there head, ran beautifully on its first tank of petrol however and my mechanic is doing a full engine/box/electrics service.
It is running great (touch wood).

I'm using it as my daily at the moment and the old girl has just ticked over 61,000 miles. I put almost 1000 miles on it during Christmas and New Year, it has been the perfect waft mobile.

I've had a couple of niggles, it is going into Mercedes on Tuesday for an MOT and to have a new duo valve fitted as the old one has failed causing the heater to be on full at all times. I've also got to fit a new reversing light switch as I noticed (yesterday) that I have no reverse lights.

I've fitted winter tyres and they have been brilliant, I've also just bought another set of wheels so I can refurbish them and fit my summer tyres to them.

You have to post some pictures up of you car, they are fantastic machines.

Just to add, if you are going to put miles on it, be aware that the 3.0 straight six gets pretty much the same fuel economy as the V8 - at a 70 to 80mph cruise over 300 miles I average just below 25mpg and around town it dips happily into the teens. I am going to have the fuel injection system serviced when the car is in next week but I'm not holding my breath!

That's absolutely fantastic OP !

I don't suppose you've seen BossCerbera's W126 by any chance? He has had his one for a very long time and recently had a complete re-skin restoration job done on it. Absolutely fantastic cars.

Cheers John. I've seen pics of BossCerbera's Merc but didn't know he had fully restored. I really do love mine, but I keep hankering after a 560...

By the way, I love your V8 Pilot, one old Ford I have always wanted!

Cheers Hooli!

I like old and quirky cars, stuff you don't see on the road too often or that are a bit 'uncool'. I have some interesting 'wants'!

Cheers for that! I hope to pop a thread up when I get it back from the mechanic in a couple of weeks and get it a good clean!

Also would love a 560 but at this age it really is buy on condition and proper examples are very few and far between. I was the same as you....when I actually drove the 300 I was very surprised by both the smooth nature and the top end shove.

Yep, the reason I bought the 300! It was the nicest car I saw.

It is actually quite amusing how pokey the old girl is above 90 leptons, though I've never explored the upper reaches of it's performance envelope as that would be far too crass for such a prestigious motor...

I also can't get enough of that view down the long sculpted bonnet towards the pointed star. It makes you feel one step above the peasants in their modern Euro boxes.

hehe

Really looking forward to seeing the pictures!

Fully restored this year - 5 months' work. Car checked in to Carrosserie Dave at 300,064 miles and 25 years old.

During deconstruction

Just had 306,000 miles service, two months after completion.

Cheers Bob ! Nice ones are getting thin on the ground now. Sadly I don't use the car as much as I'd like but the flip side is that she never fails to feel anything less than extremely special. smile
She does also make it to the odd PH meet from time to time so, if we're ever at the same one I'll let you have a closer look if you like?

Edited to add,
I see that BossCerbera has found this thread now after me pointing him over here.
I've seen the finished article above and it's nothing short of simply superb ! Having spent time with that particular 560 has made me want one myself. This could turn out to be expensive..... hehe

By 'eck that is a really stunning looking car. Fair play to going such a long way with the restoration work, it was definitely worth it.

I love the wheels too!
