Looks the part on that wheels, what's the original reg?

It may be one of many resto projects that i read on various forums.

I did see on the S1 turbo site that LEV is being broken, seems to be the way they're going just now, more money in parts than whole cars.

GKM 3Y was the original reg from new that some lucky sod was given in July 1983.

I kept it as i sold the car very cheaply despite it having almost 12 months mot it just

would not run properly whatever i replaced or adjusted.

It is now registered RYT 509Y i think.

GKM3Y is on my 2008 Fiesta now,as are the OZs too after a refurb.

OP, sad story - what happened?

Perhaps we should have some sort of crowd-funding set-up on PH?

Such a shame to see a car like that leaving an enthusiastic owner to potentially become a garage-queen - but I guess that is what "classic" values are driving.frown

What was the reason for the sale, if you don't mind me asking?

I've followed you on Pistonheads for a very long time! I remember the little fiat you had not so long ago!

Hope life is treating you well anyway.

Sadly I think it comes to most of us in the end. They are fantastic cars, but for a performance car, there are cheaper & much less hassle propositions available now.... I miss mine like crazy but I think I've done ok replacing them with slightly more reliable cars!

The cossie needs a fair bit of updating to bring it back in to modern reliability...like new looms, standalone ecu, coil on plug conversion and then the boxes and diffs don't take too much abuse, best to upgrade those too...many of us now using skyline boxes with supra diff in rear and thick wall quaife up front....new turbos make a huge drivability chnage too.

Thanks to all above for the kind words and sympathy.

I'll go over the last 5 years with this again which will hopefully

provide all the answers and try not to end up with a TLDR.

2010 Christmas day,transmission breaks,spectacularly,takes 9 months to

repair.

Then have a starting problem which cures itself,or does it ?

July 2012 breaks down in Dover on the way to Europe.

Fix it,in fact make it worse.Send it for MOT anyway....Fails !

Drive it home,I suspected, correctly for the last time, giving it a

final blast,40 mph limit locally was (cough) ignored.

October 2012 car is parked up for 3 years till yesterday when it sold.

I'm just glad I got to go to the ring in it also to Italy and Sweden

both in 2010.
I don't regret owning it,the awesome acceleration was eye

opening even with less than 300 bhp.

I now have my little convertible to enjoy now ,a complete polar opposite to a Cosworth.

This is the last pic I took before it left my garden for the last time.

Total mileage with car off road more than 50% of the 8 years owned.

25,000 which is not bad going.8205 of those in 2010 with the 2 Euro trips.

Did you read from the start and see the trashed transmission pics ?

I put the Reyland diff plate on my replacement....thumbup

Blimey, I'm not surprised you lost interest in it after all that. The thread was a good read though

Yes,to sum up,the car breaking down less than 12 months since spending ages replacing the transmission

and then failing the MOT was deffo the last straw.

That's a shame, but best of luck with the new car.

Mine is currently suffering from it's own set of problems. laugh

Regarding the UJ failure - did you keep the UJs greased? I can't see much grease in the pic. There is a little aperture in the UJ in you pic to attach a grease gun.

No I never greased it BUT in my original post about that I blamed the UJ as the first to fail but later I

decided that the front diff might have failed/seized first and then the next weakest link broke.

Just another theory

The front diffs have a known failure at high mileages, the casing flexes, the crown wheel and pinion un mesh from each

other and then all hell breaks loose.

The strengthened diff plate I mentioned earlier fixes that.
