Awesome! My dad had two 309GTIs when I was growing up. His first was black and the second was silver. As I recall the first was pre-cat and the second had cats. He always said the second one never felt as brisk. At one stage my mum had a 205GTI 1.6 as well. The old chap always said he preferred the balance of the 309 which felt a bit more stable at speed. Now I've followed in the family tradition and have a 306 Rallye. Love old French hatches so can't wait to see how the project goes. Enjoy!

It's been a while since I updated this thread.

The car is now being worked on, Greg (the chap at the bodyshop) called me up today to say that things are moving along. The body is actually fairly solid however the sill end one one side needs cutting out and replacing and there are some issues around the front panel.

They have had to modify the wing that came with the car as this was for a later model as the indicator hole was in the wrong place, they also finally got the passenger door open, this was down to a broken mechanism.

All the glass is out and the car is being taken back to bare metal in most areas. The rear beam is going to be rebuilt and we are looking for a new interior as the one I have is quite baggy. Then it will be onto the the engine, overhauling the head and giving it a full health check to make sure everything is OK and also look at the crappy idle.

Anyway, some piccies:

The passenger door is coming along nicely, the new wing and boot have their coat or primer and the rest of the car is being worked on. I can't wait to see it painted!

Still struggling to find an interior for it, proving to be really hard to find. I've been quoted for a re-trim but I'd rather fit original style material.

That's superb! Strangely I collected my car and paid cash in Exeter airport sight unseen from Edinburgh!

A great combination you have there, there's something nice about enjoying a low value car you like - yeah you might get bits and bobs done here and there as and when you fancy them, but without the millstone of depreciation the overall cost is a fraction of running a newish Golf tdi. And so much more enjoyable (mostly!).

Thanks for the offer. I am really looking out for an original early model cloth interior, but I will definitely keep you in mind if nothing comes up.

I love having old cars just for this reason! It'll be an ongoing job making the old Pug nice and fresh looking. I can't wait to get the old girl back on the road again. It's always an adventure driving an unknown car a huge distance after buying it unseen, I reckon everybody should do it at least once in their lives...!

There is only one thing better than fresh paint, and that is bolting shiny bits back on fresh paint.
Definitely! It's going to be great fun seeing it all go back together again. Then I can crack on with hunting for more bits for it.

I'm also near Aberdeen. My dad bought a brand new red 3 door in 1987 - E292ASA, which he kept for 16 years. It was written off twice and brought back to life both times.

This should be worth a bob or two once its restored.

Thanks for all the kind words. You are more than welcome to see it when it's finished!

Once the bodywork is done it'll be on to the oily bits. The biggest issue is now finding interior trim, ten years ago it wasn't a problem, now it's nigh on impossible. I'm considering buying a second one if one comes up to use as spares. The annoying thing is a couple of ratty early three door MOT failures were on Ebay recently and I didn't get my act together quick enough.

Love it, starting to go up in value too. I am getting my Steele grey 205 quoted for paint tomorrow.

Try 205 nuts for interior.....they are brilliant, I got mine from them

It's nice to hear about all these old Pugs being restored and refreshed! You'll have to get some pictures up of it being painted.

Thanks for the tip, I'll try 205 Nuts and see if they can help.
