No problem.

If at some point during your break from the project you want to go through the calculations and double check that you've got a well balanced system for this particular car, then feel free to drop me an email and I will be more than happy to talk you through it all. Even if we do eventually come to the conclusion that the current system is OK, with something as safety critical as brakes it can never hurt to be too thorough.

Don't worry, I don't charge anything!
Thanks a lot, it's appreciated. I will do just that though with the way things are progressing it's likely to be next year now smile

Great work so far with this car, shame it wont be ready however I enjoy your updates so I don't mind you dragging it out.

As for the brakes, your approach to this whole build and the quality of the work has been outstanding. I can't imagine you getting this really wrong although like most of this car being so bespoke and adjustable I am certain that you will test, adjust, retest etc until you have it just as you want it.

Keep up the good work!

Thank you. You are absolutely right, there will be a lot of testing involved on disused airfields and other safe places. I'm actually looking forward to that bit smile

A quick update: I've got the car to a state where it can roll so that it can be transported.

The first quick job was to replace the boot struts with some heavy duty versions. Very early Mk3 Fiestas had a single boot strut which is obviously rated to lift the tailgate on its own, and later on Ford switched to two struts to balance out the lifting forces; it could be a bit jerky with a single strut. The later twin struts were around 50% rating of the single.

I bought two of the earlier struts so now the tailgate self opens with a bit more conviction!

I fitted the previously modified sport type Focus rear ARB. The links aren't fitted yet - I need to order some Whiteline adjustable versions. The arrows show the ARB link mount positions; one on the bar, and two I designed in to the suspension arms so the links can be flipped over and repositioned to adjust the amount of anti-roll.

I adjusted the rear coilovers to the approximate ride height. There's a lot of toe-in at the moment which makes the front of the wheel look closer to the top of the arch than it actually is.

The car is going back to SMS next weekend for a bit more paintwork; I've got some new bonnet vents to go in to replace the current second-hand versions that are slightly warped, and then it will have a final machine polish now that the paint is hard. Once SMS are finished ithe car can go to my unit and I will start to get organised in there.

I know plenty of people have said it before, but seriously this project has got to be the best one on Pistonheads. I don't say that very lightly either, there are people with some serious skills on this site.

Looking forward to the day the builds completed with lots of anticipation!

Here's the tool:

www.blackartdynamics.com/BrakeDev/Index.php

Dynamic bias should always be positive (front biased). Usually around 10-20% is good, but yours came in at over -300%.

Minor update.

I've been holding up the engine build due to diverting spare funds to a property investment; Ian was waiting for me to order a 95mm stroke billet EN40B crank from http://ikengineering.co.uk/cranks.html. I called IKE today to order the crank only to find they are closed until October 9th rolleyes

In other news the head that Ian had modified for my build was donated to another customer who urgently needed an engine for an upcoming motorsport event. The finished 2.0 engine made 560bhp on an engine dyno! I don't have the graph, or boost figures to hand, but it does point to some interesting results in store for my 2.2 engine.

Ian has another brand new crate engine from which to start another head from scratch, and by way of a gesture for passing on my head (which really wasn't and inconvenience at all) he has for me a set of solid Inconel exhaust valves. The previous spec was solid stainless.

The car will be back from the bodyshop at the weekend. It's had a final buff now the paint is hard, and once back at the unit I can begin fit the bodykit and decals etc.

Great to see this is still going. It's gonna be a hell of a Mk3 when it's done. Surely the best in the world.

I bought my G/F a new (to her) car so I've kept the old one for towing duties; it's the much criticised 2.0 'GTi' i.e. the variant that was probably responsible for ruining the image of the Golf GTi biggrin. It's pretty comfy and tows the Fiesta reasonably enough...

Anyway, the car has undergone a final mop to get rid of any marks I've added during the build so far, and it looks even better than before.

Next the bit I've been looking forward to: adding decals, badges, and mouldings.

Looking great. I think the days of the 335d (Mapped) have gone and should be replaced with the MkIII Fiesta (Mopped).

How are those Escort Cossy style wheels coming along, are they still the one's you're planning to use? The ones on there now are about the only thing about the whole project that I don't like.

God dammit! I got my hopes up seeing this thread on the first page, I was just thinking it had been a while since any updates. IIRC Mark was moving his stuff into a new unit and trying to finish the M3, so maybe not much has been done.
