£250 MGF How bad can it be?
Discussion
Saw this advertised on the bargain basement thread yesterday. It was about 9 miles down the road so I thought I'd have a look. A mate and I have been looking out for something super cheap to split the cost of owning and learn a bit more about spannering on. £125 each sounded like a decent proposition and, if it did go bang badly we hadn't got our fingers too badly burned.
How bad is it? Well, firstly, it is filthy, needs a really good clean inside and out. The interior is ratty, the door cards in particular are nasty but the dash is tidy and unmarked. The sills are clear of rust, though there has been an ugly repair made on the rear left sill. Mechanically all seems pretty well, it has had a new head gasket, carried out at a main dealer's at a cost of £2800! The hydragas suspension was overhauled three years ago too. It is riding a little low, but at the same height all round. I wonder if the gas needs topping up? The brakes feel horrible and screech like hell, I dare say they are metal on metal. First job is to get the brakes done and see what the MOT man says come the end of the month when it is due.

It's hard to believe that's what £250 buys you. If you're passing your test now there are so many options for interesting cars that are usable and you can take some pride in.
Back when I passed my test in the 90's it was a polo, nova or fiesta. If you were flush, a golf, escort or Astra.
None of them would last more than 15 minutes without requiring maintenance and often were held together with string and sticky tape.
Good luck with the purchase. Smart move.

<does double-take>
I had N754GUB, 416SLi, as a co.car. Last seen (by me) on the back of a recovery wagon after being dragged from the hedge I'd left a hole in... Driver-side doors downwards... To add insult to injury, not only did I have to explain it to the co.car woman at work, but I wasn't even where I was meant to be, since I was on the way back from a (successful, fortunately) job interview...

I've have 2 mgfs in my time , they are nice cars.
A couple of things i found is the tyres should be the same at the back as it can be a bit scitish..
The roof, it is better to swap for a hardtop and remove the roof all together if you budget stretches, i ran mine thru the winter too when it was snowing, more refined with hardtop and remove in the summer..
