Rover 75 Diesel Bargain
Discussion
Just a small update really. Managed to track a boot lid down for only £20 so that is now fitted (wasn't easy). It's definitely added value to the car as it no longer looks so tatty.
The car has been performing faultless, I have now done around 2000 trouble free miles. Recently went down to WSM for the night from Merseyside, below is the picture of the miles covered and how much fuel it used. I'm sure you will be impressed as I was!

I have said it before and I will say it again. That car is a bloody good buy. You took a view of the abandoned car, correctly, from the subsequent inexpensive ( in relation to modern motoring) costs to bring it back to OTR condition. Excellent judgement and you are reaping the rewards. Such cars are about if you look carefully enough, which you did. Excellent job, I hope she remains reliable and I see no reason why she should not. Well done again!
Just a little update! Car still going, now done over 2000 miles in just over a month! Smokes a little for a few seconds when first started (blue) but only when it's been standing for 8 hours after work. I'm also topping the water up about a pint a week but apart from that still faultless. I'm still enjoying it but just wish it was that little bit quicker! Tomorrow I am treating it to another oil and filter change then a trip to London from Merseyside is planned to see Morrissey at the end of the month. I still think I got a bargain and the car looks like it's worth alot more which you couldn't say about a 300 quid Vectra!

Good to hear your car is still behaving. The water leak would concern me, modern engines are very dependant on cooling systems working absolutely correctly and I would suggest getting the problem fixed ASAP. The days when topping up regularly is needed are long gone and I would recommend sorting this. Modern engines can be very expensive to fix if this causes any localised overheating. Hope it all continues to go well. Damned good buy.Steffan said:

One of the weakest spots of the 75 is the gaskets; not actually the head gasket on the K series, but all of the other ones for the manifold, water pump and various hoses in and out of the block and head. If you're topping up with a brightly coloured coolant it should be pretty obvious where the leak is - get it fixed sooner rather than later as it will be expensive if it decides to overheat.
The other advantage to that is that if you know the engine is in good condition, I hear that the Diesel 75 engine is very receptive to remapping...;)
Little update! I've done just over 3000 miles now since September so mileage is just over 128,000 now. The car has been faultless, not used any water since the last update which is great.
Its due 2 rear tyres as they are coming onto the limits but they seem pretty pricey so may go down the part worn route.
I still like the car (I honestly can't recommend a 75 Diesel for those wanting a cheap work hack) but been looking at the first generation Lexus IS200 recently a little too much. I think fuel economy would be a big downer for me.
Will post some new photos tomorrow after the weekly wash, polish and hoover at the hand place up the road!

Don't do it!
I had always wanted a IS200 since they first came out, and bought a 1999 Sport with 70k miles on a couple of years ago. It was nicer to be a passenger in than drive if i'm honest. They are very thirsty which you wouldn't mind if they actually had a decent amount of pace. It lasted a month before I replaced it.

^^oops yep that's what I meant!
In fairness I'll probs keep this for a while as it's so good on Diesel and my mileage is going to cut down to around 4 miles each way now for work but I'll have all my other pottering about to do still!
Must go test drive a Lexus though and hopefully be disappointed to get the idea out of my head :-)

Massive update!
The bargain Rover is now sold and I have just purchased a 2001 Lexus IS200 SE. What a difference! Will post pics up and my thoughts tomorrow but for now I cant stop driving it and Love listening to the straight 6 growl! I'm in love :-)
Best of luck to you! Limousine replaces a good seemingly solid tourer. I do hot the Lexus gives that little extra. Time will tell I suspect the new ovner of the Rover got a damned good car.
