Beer......eBay......and a V8 Discovery
Discussion
Well, some of you may remember. I have a problem.
In March this year, I went to the pub, drank too much, bidded on a 1973, non runner, restoration project Series 3 Landrover. I won it 30 minutes later. Luckily, it turned out to be a gem, only 11 miles away, and its going to be all well.
So....this Tuesday gone, in the pub, drinking, must have had far too much, I bidded on a V8 Discovery 1. The best bit, no memory of doing this, until on Thursday evening, my phone makes a noise. Ive won a bloody V8 Discovery. Good.
Ok, where is it? Exeter. st, thats 140 miles away, not too far though. Next....must be collected by Sunday as the guy emigrates. Right. Space, I have a two car drive, 4 cars, caravan, and boat. Erm, st. £795 needed and a space needed for the Disco. Ill worry about space later. Gent called me last night, very apologetic. He couldn't find the history, or the spare key, would I still buy it, he will reduce it to £700. Of course I will
So....this morning, off I trundle to the train station (600yrds from home), collect my tickets, and then need food
On the train I jump for a lovely long journey. 3 changes, but all went smoothly. Turned up, the guy had kindly filled the LPG tank up (oh yes, he forgot to mention that in the add, I just saw the filler cap), and we did all the paperwork. Turns out, full Main Dealer and Specialist history! Bingo!!
To the truck itself, a 1996 V8 Discovery 5 door Manual. Odd Spec, no A/C, but twin Sunroofs, Wood Trim, Alloys, and no foglights? And on the way home, I hear a rattle, an irritating noise under my seat. I open the small flap, and what do I find, the spare key and remote, and a folder? Turns out, full Main Dealer and Specialist history! Bingo!!
A few pics, filthy, in Tesco's when I got home
So, my winter runner, towcar for caravan and boat, and general toy, is now home. Im a rather happy chappy!

Good 'choice' even if unintentional.
I bought one through PH three years ago for similar money; 150,000 miles, auto, no LPG and ten years service history from a garage in Cumbria who had no idea what they were doing.
Suspension rebush sorted the steering shake, random direction changes and poor ride. Completely standard and it now rides and drives really well but doesn't look anywhere near as good as yours.

Wow £700 excellent purchase OP! I dare say it would have gone for at least double what you've paid had the seller remembered to mention the LPG kit.
Here is ours that we purchased a few months ago, similar spec to yours V8, LPG and manual. Didn't have an MOT but only 54k from new, very well looked after and very clean underneath. Just needs a service, LPG tune and its good to go. Also thinking about transfering the leather interior from the wrecked RR Classic sat in the yard

Nice!
I had a similar experience on a D1 V8 a few years ago. What appeared a run-down early model with faded paint and chunky tyres with a genuine and proven 54,000 miles for £500 ended up polishing up fantastically and looked so much better on a good secondhand set of original alloys.
I had it Waxoyled and used it every day.
Wife hated the manual LT77 'box, so I sold it for a reasonable profit and bought an L322 Range Rover.
Still miss it, in truth. You won't go far wrong with yours.
Anyway, get yours steam cleaned and waxoyled.

I see no "problem".
Last night, I decided to go and discover some mud, check the diff lock worked, and high/low range. Things I didn't bother with on collection, and my bid on eBay meant I had purchased it regardless.
Went for a drive through some of South Hants finest lanes, following a friends expedition spec 40k 110 td5. Well, everywhere he went, so did I, not even slipping wheels. In fact, the hill he took in Low 4, I took in High 4, the power was just there.
Its made me aware the sidesteps need to go, and that a 2" lift with HD springs wouldn't go amiss.

I used to have V8 Discovery similar to yours, and now have a V8 Range Rover Classic.
They are supremely capable cars even in standard trim, my Discovery went places I really didn't think it would go.
All I had done to it was remove the lower valance and fit some tyres that had tread on them. It regularly climbed/crossed obstacles without having to try again, which my friends 101 often didn't. The engine made such light work of long cross-axled slopes, that as you say, low range didn't really need to be used anything like as much as it would in a TDi.
(Rover V8s hate water, came all the way up to the windscreen with standard intake and just about kept running!)
Really regret selling it.
My RRC won't see a P&P course, but it's seen a couple of local greenlanes, and again the engine makes everything seem so ridiculously easy.
Great car and a superb price OP, enjoy!

Tyres are something I am looking into, maybe in the new year though, once I have the long haul to Belgium and Germany over with the caravan on. Keep some MPG, its going to be a heavy rolling outfit.
Snorkal, Diff Guards, Steering guard, and light guards are all ordered already. Im a bit of a pushover when it comes to nice stuff, that protects aswell. Can't wait to play in it more!
