I've been using it all morning and it is driving absolutely fine, and there aren't any warning lights or anything. So I think that getting to the bottom of the problem could prove challenging/interesting.

It just doesn’t make sense to me why it is doing what it's doing when it has the hissy fit. It seems to do it, and then correct itself the next day. Weird.

Maybe you have problems with car battery / batteries ? I know that your car is bought new, and costs a lot of money, but watching all those salvage car videos, a lot of the times all the problems / warnings / limp home etc go away once you put a good new battery / aux battery and cancel the codes. Worth a try ?

Battery issues on modern Mercs usually first manifest themselves as the stop-start rarely, if ever working. I had a warranty replacement on my S213 E Class.

Your ownership experience sounds similar to mine - great when it’s working, but multiple annoying faults and dealerships who are adept at taking £400 off you for an oil change and inept at diagnosing and repairing things. Their parts supply chain leaves a lot to be desired too - they never seem to have anything on the shelf and anything that’s not a service part takes weeks because it “has to come from Germany”. I buy from a German company weekly and they get stuff here next day easily enough.

I too had experienced most of the range in courtesy cars. I really didn’t like the A180 - it felt like it had been engineered to feel “sporty” with a hair trigger throttle response and overly firm ride when it was just underpowered, didn’t handle very well and the control weights are all wrong. Driven back to back with Ford Focus, which always just feel right, the difference is stark - the Ford feels like it has been set up and honed by an engineer who enjoys driving, the Merc feels like someone stuck their head in the door, saw a shiny interior and big digital dash and said “that’ll do”.

I got completely fed up and sold it to Cazoo when they were paying silly money for stock 18 months ago- depreciation was about £120 a month! I’ve been running round in a 12 year old Mondeo since which has been something of a revelation - apart from an exhaust back box detaching itself it’s been completely trouble free. I can throw it into the garage next to my office if it needs anything and speak to the guy who will fix it rather than travelling 30 miles to the MB dealer and try and explain a complex issue to some teenage girl who by her own admission is not a technician and doesn’t know much (anything useful) about cars!

The car is still playing up, but understanding why is baffling though. My missus did a load of miles in it on Friday and it was fine, but she did a load more miles in it on Saturday and it threw the engine light up and put itself into limp mode again.

The RAC came out to it on Saturday and they got rid of the engine light, and it ran fine again all day yesterday. So it goes back into Merc again tomorrow, and hopefully(I won't hold my breath) they will find out what is wrong with it.

I came away from BMW and purchased an AClass AMG.
It was for ever in with the dealer for something or other. Which was annoying but not half as annoying as the Mercedes dealers themselves (LOOKERS owned) they made the experiance twice as bad as it needed to be.

Never again will I own a Merc. Back to the BMW for me.

I'd love a X5M, and I really liked the X5 4.8iS that I had years ago as well. I just think the fuel bills could hurt in a X5M with the mileage we do. They are lovely cars though for sure.

We were considering a X5 40d the other day funnily enough too.

Can I interest you in an X5 50e Lee? I've had one for a few days and it's an amazing piece of kit with 490hp it goes well despite the weight, rides wonderfully on the air suspension, it goes back tomorrow as my 7 series is fixed and if I could I would get one but the £90k+ list price of the one I'm borrowing is too steep for me.

Worth a look if they are doing deals on them.

We actually had a test drive of an X5 45e before we went for the GLE. We were put off it a bit though, because the one we were meant to be driving had a fault with the hybrid battery so it couldn't be used. So we took the dealer principals X5 45e out instead.

Neither of us were all that impressed with it to be honest, we both said how heavy it felt, and the performance didn't match up to the on paper stats for us either. However I have read some really good things about the X5 50e though.

I'm pleased to hear that your issues with the 7 Series have been sorted bud. thumbup

Yeah they gave me 45e for day and the 50e felt a lot better another 100hp I think, the B58 in it is the full fat version sounds good as well but you need to be able to charge it every day so a wall box would be handy so you could just plug rather than faffing with cable through the letter box.

I think the sat nav screen in my car is going to feel very small tomorrow when I pick it up.

Just an update on this.

Merc had it for 3 days and they took it on a long run each day, and they couldn't find anything wrong with it. However it has been behaving itself since to be fair(touchwood).

It is having some more new rear tyres fitted on Friday(that will the fifth set of rears including the ones that were on it from the factory, and it isn't even 2 years old yet!).

The Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S have only last 3 months/8.5k miles this time, whereas the previous set of MPS4S lasted 6 months/15k miles in comparison. They are £400 each, so obviously I've been moaning about it as usual to my missus!

While I was tyre shopping, I did notice that the original Pirelli P-Zero that were on it from the factory are back available again. So if the Michelin only last 2 minutes again, I will swap back to the Pirelli, because they lasted 20k miles in comparison.

I had the fifth set of rear tyres fitted yesterday, and it will be interesting to see how long these last. Hopefully longer than 3 months/8.5k miles though!

If they don't last, I will go back to Pirellis if I can get them.

Hi lee,
just read the thread. How are you going with the latest tyres?
I am thinking of changed my E220d Night edition Premium plus to a GLE 400D premium plus so your thread has been interesting.
I have a the PS4s on mine and they have been good 27k all round at the moment, obviously the e class estate is a lot lighter.
Keeping an eye on the second hand market at the moment.

Hi Damien, the tyres have started well thanks, however it hasn't done a lot of miles yet since they were put on. It will be doing a load of miles from Wednesday though, so that will give me a better idea.

I have MPS4 on the 370Z and they have worn well, plus I have MPSS on the M4 and they have worn well too(28k miles from the fronts and currently on 24k miles on the rears as well).

So I can only put the wear down to the weight of the GLE I think, although the front tyres aren't doing too bad(MPS4S), and they've done 16k miles up to yet with a fair bit of wear left in them.

If you don't do loads of miles yourself, I don't think that you'll notice the wear as much as we do I reckon. We both do love the car though, and it is a lovely thing to drive/sit/travel around in for sure. It also has a decent turn of pace for something that weighs 2300kg I think too.

Wishing you all the best with your search if you end up going for one. smilethumbup

Thanks Lee,
I do less miles these days, probably about 18k per year, a lot of motorway too. Plus a trip to South of France,I noticed you have averaged 37mpg long term which is great for a car like this, last 10k on mine has been 44.8mpg according to Mercedes ME, it dropped when i got rid of the run flats and put the Michellins on. Working my maths out i would be OK with 35mpg overall.

Thought about a X5 40d but my boss has a M50d so not really the done thing ;-) Plus he has problems with water ingress and electrics. The GLE is a much nicer place to be. Test drove one recently but wasnt impressed with the sales guy and high mileage for me, overall was a lovely drive though.

I managed to get caught speeding in it on Tuesday for the very first time in 33 years of driving!

I got caught doing 35 in a 30 with a radar gun at the side of the road, however more worrying was that I didn't even realise that I'd been caught though! hehe

I'm fuming...because I thought that if I ever got caught I'd be in one of the more sporty cars that I have to be honest, because I generally drive this really steady.

When I looked on Google maps, I realised that I had my missus in with me at the time as well, so I presume that I was chatting to her rather than looking at the road!

I'm hoping that I get offered a speed awareness course so I can keep my licence clean though.

Luke.

I've given it a rare wash today. I never like doing it all that much, but when I have done it I'm pleased that I have. I gave the inside a good going over as well.

It had another hissy fit yesterday, and it went into limp mode, and the fans came on, and they sound like an aeroplane taking off when they do. It disconnects the turbos, and you lose loads of power, and the revs sit really high versus normal.

I think the car thinks that it is overheating, although it actually isn't though. So I reckon there must be a dodgy sensor somewhere I think.

My missus is really peed off with the car now(she does a lot of miles in it, so she's lost confidence in it), so I reckon there will be a good chance that it will get swapped for something else. Although I'm/we're not sure what to go for though. Time will tell.
