E30 M3 - Unintended Rebuild
Discussion
That’s some serious ups and downs in a year!
It’s really cool to see one of these being used as intended and fiddled with because I bet that many are wrapped up in cotton wool these days.
I also know the feeling of frustration that can come with running more than one older car as daily’s.

Great thread.
Did you find out what was causing the HG failure?
Cheers Lifeboat Did you find out what was causing the HG failure?
The mating surface on the block had been very roughly machined/faced using the incorrect tooling when the engine was rebuilt in Germany prior to my ownership. Apparently had it been left as is and not had the wick turned up and the crap kicked out of it it might have been alright, but with me fitting the airbox, mapping it and then tracking it, it was all too much. I'm not an engineer by any stretch, but that's my understanding of it.

Thanks very much Court, don't get me wrong I want to keep it tidy with a view to preserving it but it's not a low mileage absolute minter so it can absolutely get used & tracked etc. I think lots of them are show pony's which is a shame, because they're fairly crap as a standard car and certainly not very exciting on the road in totally standard form. It’s really cool to see one of these being used as intended and fiddled with because I bet that many are wrapped up in cotton wool these days.

I bet the Z3 rack makes a big difference - I had one on my E36 328 and it made the steering much better for me in conjunction with a couple of other mods
I’d been spoilt with other cars with quick racks in the past and the E30 (non-M and M ) always seemed too slow as standard compared to what I was used to - sadly my experience with them was all before the Z3 was invented and the Griffin racks were quite expensive
Great thread anyway

A superb thread, very informative and one can really feel your pain in all these mishaps.
Great looking cars as well!
May I ask what level of racing you do?
Thanks very much Sidewinder. Great looking cars as well!

The racing I do is very much club level stuff, I did Britcar in an E36 M3 a few years ago but 've been racing with the CSCC for the last 2 or 3 years and done the odd 750mc & BRSCC race. My E36 had an S50 in it for years and is standard bodywork, manual ZF box so it was perfect for CSCC's Modern Classics series. When the old faithful S50 engine expired last year (I can't grumble too much, it had done over 100hrs of competition at that point) I decided to take the car down to a bare shell over winter for a proper rebuild. It's had a new cage, been seam welded everywhere, fitted a carbon roof and managed to get it down to 1058kg with n fuel or driver whilst it still has standard bodywork and doesn't look like a frankenstein car.
I also had an S54 built, which did mean I couldn't race it in Modern Classics anymore, so have moved (up?) to CSCC's New Millennium series for this year. Jury is out on whether that's a good move, as the pace is another level on, and there are still certain elements of my car that are a bit outgunned such as track width, non sequential gearbox etc. Will see how this year pans out, it may end up with an S50 back in it one day.

It sounds a great project - hope this engine does the business for you.

Cheers! The rack is an amazing improvement, it makes the car feel much more modern in a good way. I bet the Z3 rack makes a big difference - I had one on my E36 328 and it made the steering much better for me in conjunction with a couple of other mods

Thank you for all the kind comments chaps, much appreciated.
The engine should be no more than 2 weeks out hopefully. I'll pick it up and get it back in the hole with a friend at home and check it will run etc.
The builder then wants to map the car themselves on their own dyno so they have some accountability. I really like the sound of that, but am waiting to hear back from them that they can deal with my old engine management. The car has the standard OEM Bosch Motronic ECU with a Maxx Alpha N piggyback, I think the latter might be new to them but will wait & see.
Worst case I think they will allow it to go to Wayne @ Chipwizards who's seen my car before anyway.
Will keep the thread updated!

What a great thread, really enjoying it so far and looking forward to seeing and hearing more about a healthy M3 when you get it back on the road
Btw, I can let you know that an unrestricted CSL will run right off the clocks, and reckon we were probably touching a real 180mph, on a warm summers evening just north of Munich a good few years ago

Wow! Great to see you are still up to no good in motors especially those of a BMW flavour! Used to love your build threads on the old E36coupe forum, recognised the writing style before the photos loaded on this thread I reckon.
Looking forward to following your updates, the previous owner sounds like one of life's genuine good guys with the way the transaction over a bank Holiday weekend was handled. Sorry to read about your old man too btw.
