Finally got the chassis for my dreamcar......

A monocoque replica GT40 Mk I chassis made to the original drawings and materials (although the steel is zinc coated, not galvanized). Space is non existant as the whole car is shoe-horned inside my workshop playing bunk beds with a cobra kit car. The gt is on the top bunk.

Motive power is a 1972 mexican 302 small block ford. Probably put a 289 crank inside.

I still need to put the bulkhead, roof and front suspension mounts on the chassis but will get there (in a few years).

Rear hoop got a clean and etch prime....

A view down the side sills, the complete chassis will be cleaned and zinc primed.

This is the rear clip, an 'original racing spare from P1041' I couldnt resist checking the colour history...

Found some damage and lightly sanded down....

Looks like, from bottom to top.....

Glass - Blue - Gulf Blue? (yea right) - Yellow (Beurly?) - white primer - yellow gelcoat - red wash

I wonder if there is a central strip under there will investigate after F1 quali.

And my "its staying in the house and is NOT going in the shed" induction system.

I have a 2/3 completed workshop and minium build space but am loving every second as I can finally push on with this build.

(I hope its ok here please move to 'kit car' forum if you feel the need)

GR88 is corect the steel sheet is zinc sprayed. Im finalising the workshop build and will get the chassis zinc etch primed as soon as the 'shed' is done.

Then I will setup the rear clip, doors, roof, rear bulkhead, windscreen and front clip (which all have to 'fit' correctly) then start spot welding/mig welding the remaining components.

Here is picture of a Mk III chassis...

I will also be fitting a roll cage and the rear hoop will be 'inserted' into the rear bulkhead. I've aquired a few parts for the build...

Engine block...

Original Stuart Warner fuel pumps...

Valve covers and pedal box....

And finally for now pedal box casting.

Way back in 1964-65 the original gearbox was a Coletti transaxle. This box, designed for a 2 hour F1 race was never designed to run 24 hours du Mans, a ZF transaxle was designed and originals have a ZF-0.
The only major component left to get is my gearbox which will be a 5 speed ZF-2 which are still being produced today. Here is a link to the gearbox man.

http://www.rbttrans.com/index.html

The gearbox was also used in a Pantera and is inverted in the GT with modified oiling routes in the casing. There is also a 'top' plate which ties in with the part in my first post.

Here is a Pantera ZF

...and the engine gearbox location on a sister car.

Gearbox is good for 500HP but is not cheap!!!!.... about 8k

Can use other gearboxes but im turning more purist as the build goes on, must be old age (45).

The monocoque chassis is rare about 180 were original in the 60's, Abbey panels made another 20 or so and there are about 30 others since then. Mine is built using original drawings and materials (apart from the zinc spray). Back outside now to treat some floor timbers....

I was offered an original ford racing block (£4K) but settled for a 1972 'Mexican' block. This block is identical to a 289 HiPo block with beefier mains. I have talked to the FIA and am aiming to get a historic Racing Passport to allow heratige racing.

This started as a joke when I told a friend that after 12 years of collecting parts that I had actually attached a part to the chassis. He didnt believe me.....
