HI all!

Been a long time reader of Pistonheads and enjoy reading the forums as part of a daily ritual! Just thought I should sign up and share pics of my my pride and joy!

She's my second mk2 golf and also my second car - the first being another G reg MK2 golf 1.6 driver which i owned since i was 17 until I got my first years no claims bonus back in May this year and brought myself my first MK2 Golf Gti 8 valve.

I'll let the pics do the talking - she's tornado red, 210k miles, lowered subtly on coilovers, and I brought a set of OZ Racing SuperTurismo GTs to replace the steelies it came with when I first got her!

I have since refitted the front and rear GTI badges to the front grille and rear of the car!

Other bits I have done to the car since I have brought her:

Full stainless exhaust system with straight front pipe and DTM backbox - suits the 80s car styling I think
K and N cone filter
Recon'd gearbox
New rear wheel bearings
A few other little bits here and there but apart from that she's pretty mint for her age! biggrin

Any opinions welcome, thanks smile Rikki

Oh I thought the link worked okay - seems to work fine on my iPad! Lol!

If not, just go onto YouTube and search Minusfivesounds - this is my bros YouTube channel and he put the videos up - and there should be 3 videos of the golf doing drive bys and popping flames wink

But yeah thanks for all the posirive comments!

The splitter is pretty low but somehow it doesn't catch every single speed bump - just have to be careful going over them! :P

I'd love to have a TSR upgrade too - was looking at just getting one of the updated heads for a bit of extra oomph but the standard engine still has a fairly decent amount of poke in it! Not bad for only 115bhp and it really does fly and suprise a lot of the newer cars that try and keep up on e twisties!

Thanks for the positive feedback everyone! biggrin

And this is how the story started for anyone that's interested! I got the car back in may after part exing my old mk2 golf driver as I got my years no claims some started looking at mk2 golf gti's and ended up with this as the beginning of my project!
Bear in mind I was only 19 when I brought this - 20 now - so was only on limited funds!

Day one!

Was taken as soon as I got her home - picked her up for a princely sum of £125 and the part ex of my old 1.6 driver,
Originally 210k miles but the body was pretty mint - few marks here and there and slight rust on the scuttle and bootlid but nothing too major! Previous owner had polished up to the original shiney red too! Looked great and was a good base to start on!

There was however a few issues which I quickly picked up and knew needed resolving:

The gearbox was very noisy - shaft bearings were Fubar'd tbh - also found out the car had been used for towing as there was a long wiring loom curled up in the boot, holes in floor and marks underneath the rear where the towbar had been fitted! - who seriously tows with a Golf Gti? Lol!

It didn't idle properly - ICV needed a bloody good clean

Half of the fuses were blown and there was no radio!

The miles meter and rev counter had stopped working so ad to replace with the dials from a car - hence a lot lower mileage! Lol

However a new cambelt and gasket had been fitted at VW MK, a mk3 golf heater matrix had been fitted - so I could remove the bypass pressure relief valves and get good heat

So the work commenced!

Cleaned the ICV and K&N air filter - look at the petrol color after a good 2 hour soak!

Cleaned MAF and Throttle body unit into inlet manifold!

Next was to replace the noisy gearbox.. Old one out!

New VW clutch and flywheel had been fitted also upon discovery! Good times! biggrin

Had some help from some mates with the process! Lol!l

And after that was all done I sorted out most of the electrical niggles and fitted a JVC head unit and a sub and amp just to boost the sound a bit!

Few pics at a petrol station with my brothers Corrado vr6..

http://i1185.photobucket.com/albums/z358/VeeDubRik...

Shortly after I brought my OZ Racing Superturismo GTs - 15 x 6.5 j!

And fitted!

Not really OEM but they suit the car nonetheless!

Next I had a massive oil leak! Sump had rusted through and it was loosing oil like crazy!

New sump and gasket fitted! Problem solved! biggrin also fitted new rocker cover and oil cooler gaskets also whilst I was on a gasket fitting role!

One morning, came out to find this...

Some little chavvy scumbags had knocked the VW emblem and pulled my rear number plate off - leaving 2 big holes here the fixing grommets were supposed to be! One trip to halfords to buy some sticky pads and the problem was sorted!

I then spent a Saturday morning fitting the DTM backbox and Straight pipe exhaust and that's it for now really!

Sorry for the boring build thread! Will get some newer pics up when I can get a chance!

Thanks for reading! Constructive comments and criticism welcome! Lol smile

Had my first off tonight! frown

Nothing too serious but lost it when I had some serious lift off oversteer around quite an overly gritted cambered corner near to where I live, ended up getting spun into the inside kerb and ripping the bumper off the iron and the grille popping out. May have also bent a wheel as getting slight vibration and tracking is knocked out slightly too I think.

Luckily the car still drove and nothing mechanical seems to have been harmed, front bumper and splitter are ruined though :/
Been very lucky as could have been much worse - eg ended up on its ditch or going any faster would have probs seen the car on its side. :/

Lesson learnt though... Treating Slippy banked corners with caution now!

Will update after another check tomorrow in day light as a bit dark and shaken up to do so now.

Drive safe out there guys!

Hi, yeah well it's not properly fixed on tbh, but have used tiger seal and cable ties to hold it onto the iron nice and sturdy until I can source and afford a new front big bumper! So it's just a temporary fix at the moment until then! smile cant really tell too much of a difference though, doesn't stand out too much!

Nice looking golf my 2nd MK2 GTI was a Tornado red 8v 5door.

When you get a new bumper try to get an original one as it'll have the cut out's for the foglights and looks much better.
Yeah I will try and keep a look out for an original gti bumper! Agree the fogs do look a lot better! A lot more practical this tie of year too! smile

Great modern classics these.

Here's my 90 8v, 98,000 miles and all basic & standard (appart from the CD player).
Unfortunately I will be looking for a new home for it in the new year.

I have a stripped out 88 16v too with 20v Turbo conversion. Makes an awsome trackday weapon, which will easily upstage much more expensive machines!! biggrin

Wow! The Schwarzt black 90 one is lovely! biggrin

Bet the 20v T one is great fun too!

I do love a good mk2! Yours upstage mine in so many ways though! I've got so many body work bits to do to mine and it's just finding the time and money to do them! It will get there one day, or I'll decide to sell up and buy a younger one that's standard! frown

I am toying with getting mine back to standard, back to skinny bumpers, teardrops, standard suspension and get the engine work done as its smoking a little, but I just really don't know where to start now lol!

Once again, lovely motors though mate smile

what a lovely looking car!

big bumper models look much fresher than the small bumpers, i really regret selling mine, so im buying a mk1 in the new year smile

125quid is cheap too! and you know what they say, more doors, more wes!

also, regarding the front end damage, they are pretty solid, take a bump much better than my other cars, and come apart pretty easy, i had a minor one in mine too

heres a shameless plug for mine

Cheers mate! smile have got her pretty much looking how i want to now, just got a few final bits to do here and there as she's perfect by no means at all! Just keeping her nice and tidy looking for now until I can spend some real money on her! smile

And yeah she did shrug of her little accident pretty well, just need a new front bumper still!

Also. On your top pic, how do you remover the lower valance - the part the splitter attatches to? Is it just bolted on? Just that mines got a massive dent in it - hence the big bumpers to cover it up as it was originally a skinny bumper one as the arches don't match, and was thinking of going back to skinny bumpers one day smile

Your mk2 looks pretty sweet too! Nice color of green too! Very uncommon but looks great smile

Perfect car for any 20 year old! I love it! biggrin

What you guys think?

Next plan of action is to get it cleaned up nicely and a few original bits such as amber indicators, boot surround vinyl, paint sorted on doors and scuttle!

Thanks! Yeah the interior isnt too bad! Always having to clean it as the black carpets show up every bit of dirt and the dash gets a bit dusty time to time, so do my best to keep her nice and clean inside and out!

Only the drivers seat isn't as mint as the rest of the interior as its had 212k on it now, so bolster has had to be patched up until I can get it re trimmed!

Glad you like the car though, haven't followed the normal Vw scene thing eg stretched tires and stupidly low coilovers - instead opting for medium height coilovers and a nice set of OZ SuperTs smile set the car of nicely I think and a bit different from all the other mk2s with BBS on them!

Just found a few old photo shoots that were on my photo bucket account,

First batch are of mine and my mates mk3 Golf GTI! These were taken back in August, so a few months old but some quite nice pictures smile

And here's a few when I first got the GTI - had a little photo shoot with my bro's Corrado VR6.. This was around late May if I remember correctly.

Seems odd seeing the golf on steelies! Amazing how a set of wheels can transform a car! biggrin

Thanks for looking! Comments and criticisms welcome wink

Morning all, been shopping; smile

Rear bootlid surround vinyl

So should look like this...

Also looking at upgrading front brakes with cross drilled / vented disks, like this...

Along with EBC or matching Tarox pads,

Also wanting to get a few more OEM goodies such as headlight adjustment stickers etc..

Have also put the Airbox back to standard with the intake trumpet removed for added induction Induction noise wink) actually runs better for this too, plus looks a bit nicer under the bonnet IMO

Cheers, Rik
