Hi all,

Sold the porker last month:

Sold with the intention of doing a bit of financial juggling and buying an e39 M5. Drove a few, found the car i wanted etc, VERY EXITED.

Long story short the the bank decided to be barstewards and have given me a few hoops to jump through before i get the M5. oh joys of self employment mad

In the mean time i borrowed my uncles car, which he was selling for 3.5K. Spent a bit of time and effort and ended up selling it for him £4450.

So there i was, No M5 for at least a few weeks and a grand burning a hole in my pocket...it could only be an MX5.

Viewed a few dogs before i found this UK 1.6 MK1. One owner from 1990-2003, enthusiast owner doing 2k over next few years. 65K on the clock.

Fantastic car! Drives perfect and a real credit to it's former owner.

The MX5 lives up to the hype and more. Had an amazing run trough the peak district the day after i bought it then it was off to north wales last weekend. visited the evo triangle and would up on a beach next to the campsite:

Going to enjoy smoking around in it for the next few weeks, makes the frustration with the bank a bit easyer to deal with. Will eventually be passed on to mrs sco (to be).

Roll on M5.

lol re: my typo! Digital cocks were all the rage back in '88! laugh

thanks for all the comments people.

Was a bit sad to see the 944 go, i do miss it.

Itchy feet i guess, combined with the magnetic pull of a 400Hp V8 evil

The new owner rang me to see if i would be willing to talk to buyers if they wanted, seems like a genuine reason for sale.

So (soon to be) mrs scho suggested we get one of those things that go behind the seats to stop her hair blowing about:

Still in love with this car, off to snowdonia for the weekend again in the morning driving

15's and P5 suspension setup on the way i think.

MX now for sale,

http://www.smalllinks.com/CTR

Too juicy for MRS scho's motorway commute and she wants a hatch back, keeps going on about practicality or something rolleyes

Took it for one last spin yesterday, Behind the wheel of an MX5 with the roof down is a very special place to be.

On the plus side...I'm off down south to look at two VERY promising M5's in the morning!

No idea about that number plate, thought they were standard it on early cars?

Never fitted the cage,

Toyed with the idea of fitting coils, cage, new wheels etc but never quite got round to it...

I realized for what it would cost to get the mx5 where i wanted it i might as well stick to the plan : Buying a car i'd be happy with in it's standard spec laugh

MX5 is now staying!

The MRS decided she couldn't let it go biggrin...AFTER i spent the hours cleaning and advertising it rolleyes

Putting the cage up for sale though if anyone's interested it's on ebay wink It's not really working for me as a coffee table ornament.

I'm happy she's decided to keep it actually, It's a really nice contrast between the M5 and The MX5. Only a letter between them but absoloute polar opposites. Well, Actually there is 3.4 litres, 284BHP, 840 kg, 4 cylinders and a shed load of electronic gubbins between them but you get the idea!

An anyone recommend a a good tyre for wet weather? ours locks up for fun in the wet (really cheapo ditchseakers) I've had a few brown trouser moments in this car myself and she's got to commute in it eek

Suggestions?

Rick.

[quote]Vredstein Ultracs

Brilliant in the wet or dry, although they take a couple of miles to warm up.

Other than that, the Bridgestone Turanza is a good tyre- lasts very, very well (Father in law managed just over 20k miles on a set- albeit swapping fronts to rear at about 15k)

Not the most sporty tyre in the World, but is long lasting (great for commuting) & should'nt spit you off the road either.

Those Ultracks widely available? I normally like using Event for convienience if not black c/Tyre shopper.

Event have the Bridgestones for £250 for a full set.

Not really bothered about dry weather performance, i quite like the way the ditchinders i have on at the moment slide evil

Anyway, I've been rolling around in this again since i sold the M5

I'm getting married next month and we're using the mx5 for the honeymoon : european roadtrip.

It's a fair old trek and we're finishing up at the 'ring so wanted get a few bits sorted before we go. Getting the timing belt changed and a few other things looked at. The bits that might interest you are:

These are supposed to be the daddies for road use/occasional trackday. Would have bought P5 but they didn't have stock and i had money burning a hole in my pocket! ^

BBS RZ ^ wanted some 15's to make use of camskills crazy cheap toyo's. These are corrado G60 BBS. as well as BBS and VW logo's the wheels are actually stamped with the same squiggly symbol as my 14" daisy wheels (looks like a j and a w merged: wanatabe logo?)

I was wondering if mazda ever specced these rims on a special edition?

^Standard zorst was blowing from the backbox. This stainless system was cheaper than a mild steel jobbie. No Brainer, just hope it isn't TOO loud.

^£120 for 4 B)

Heading down the Evo triangle for a bit of a shakedown test later today. Will be down north wales for the weekend so going to have a play with ride hight/damping levels to get the chasis set up nicely.

Will get some pics. smile

Going to book a couple of trackdays for july and august. Probs Anglesy and Cadwell. Possibly Oulton but it seems to be a bit on the pricey side.

Yeah, good luck with that! Not the ideal exhaust for a long European road trip. I had a dual on mine but it was uber loud. I don't think the single exit is much different - it's down to the bore of the midpipe coming through the transmission tunnel.
Fack.

Didn't get many pics over the weekend, Too busy driving!

The suspension is fantastic, Obviously the tyres have made a huge difference aswell. Car seems a lot more sure footed.

The ride isn't bad at all. Little more bouncy than standard but not at all crashy.

Mr.Jimbo said:
RE: the wheels, is that just a stock image, or are they really 5 stud?

I can see a slight issue in mounting them if so.

Edit - JW squiggly thing is cast on both sets of BBS' I've had on my E30, believe its a BBS logo, or something to do with them at least.

4 stud. Off G60 Corrado.

Not being funny but I'd consider your options unless you're into a boomy long distance motorway journey. Could you source an OEM midpipe perhaps?
The OEM mild steel pipe was nearly £200 more expensive! It's not too bad under 70 on the Mway, And at low revs it's fairly quiet. I'll see how i feel after a couple of weeks daily use!

hornetrider said:
Oh, and forgive me just sanity checking - you had an alignment after fitting your very lovely new suspension?
Yup.

Going to get the Geo done after it settles down.

Ouch! Funnily enough my exhaust got quiter over 80mph hehe
Never really found any issue with aftermarket exhausts on the 5. It's more the wind noise that gets to you on a long trip. I've done Le Mans twice, Nurburgring once, Brittany once and Belgium once and I have to say the exhaust never entered the equation. The wind noise did though!

ETA; Scho, your 5 looks awesome! I've seen both your Porsche and your M5 and they were immaculate, if this is the same, i'm sure it's a tidy little car.

Edited by Combover on Tuesday 4th May 17:59
Thanks comb,

Thing is,It's been well looked after but It's not immaculate, And that is driving me mad.

All the OE paint has fallen off as it's not bonded to the primer, Common problem on white 5's of this vintage and apparently something to do with early water based paint. I'm in two minds weather to paint it or not.

I know it probably isn't worth it, but I can't help wanting it to be right.

Dilemma.

That's a nice looking little '5 - good to see a UK car that has been well looked after.

For long trips just use some foam earplugs to cut out the wind/exhaust noise - I use these on the motorway in my Elise (a lot of owners do) and they make a HUGE difference to the comfort levels. The stereo also sounds better with the plugs in!
Good shout!

See what i did there ^

I want a turbo one though with little or no rust.

Something I can prep to run on track and be semi competitive, through my search so far many have rust or are wrecks for anything under £4-£5k.

I am sure if I spend some more time looking I will find one but I suspect I will buy a Jap import standard and do the modifying myself so I know it was done properly!
Aye, Looked into buying an FI five myself, Seems like a bit of a mine field.

Decided to get the chasis sorted on this one first and maybe think about charger next year.

Well, I fitted one of those silenced de-cat pipes in an attempt to cut the noise down.

Failure, It's actually a bit louder.

It's great when you're out on a hoon and using all the revs but really a bit embarrassing and boomy anywhere else. Thinking about fitting a mild steel jobbie for this roadtrip and having the stainless re-fitted after we get back.

Other bit's and bob's:

-Changed Oil/Filters/Plugs

-Replaced all the coolant hoses, The old one's were feeling a bit brittle.

-Fitted new clutch slave cylinder (seals were gone)

-Fitted OEM MK2 Windblocker

-painted bonnet and rear wing (old paint had flaked off!)

-New plates front and back.

-Bought one of those rotary polishers and machine polished the car.

I'll try and get some pics this weekend.

Just been our for a bit of shakedown on the west pennine moors, So much grip eek
