My driver's side muffler (or the vicinity thereof) is giving out a god awful rattle at low revs. Getting it over to OPC tomorrow. Anyone know if baffles could be the culprit. Checked and nothing seems loose. Its driving me MAD. Has anyone else experienced this and is there a cure for this irritating development? Loud enough to cause some embarrassment in high streets. Sounds more mid 80's Datsun Cherry than 911 which I can't be doing with.

Cheers, Mike

Might be the heat shield that's come loose?

Everything feels well bolted down and there doesn't seem to be much movement with the heatshield so don't think it could be that.

Worst way it could be your catalyst. They rattle when they're shot.

oh mummy. I guess that would be pricey and not covered under my newly plonked on warranty that doesn't cover any of the bits that have gone wrong so far...

i had this problem with my c4s... can't remember what it was but took it to the opc and they fixed it foc. simple job to do. having said that, the first time they 'claimed' to have fixed it, i was bearly out of the dealers and the rattle was still there. so a quick u-turn and i was back in the dealer making appropriate noises. heat shield rings a bell. easy problem don't worry about it.

That sounds encouraging. Really hope its a quick fix. Will find out in the morning when I shake, rattle and roll down to Porsche Reading...

There's a Posche technical bulletin about rattling exhausts which involves adding a washer to the clamp that hold the tailpipe and cover. It'll be interesting to see how much an OPC charge you if that's what the problem is!

I too had (have?) a rattle in my Sports Exhaust which has been evident at low revs. Its in the OPC at the moment getting a major service and they have said that the valve relating to the the PSE needs replacing. Apparently £140 but mine will be covered by warranty. Hopefully this will fix the rattle, but my hopes have been dashed before.

That's interesting. Just been down to Porsche centre Reading. They have told me that I will need a whole new rear muffler as *non* of the bits can be bought separately. I asked if the valve only could replaced and they said no. Looking like £600 + !!! I rattled away without committing to that, esp as it will take some time to source from Germany. Which dealer is your car at? Perhaps I can call them.

What about these for sale on EBay, much cheaper and you get a matching pair??

Thanks Paul,

Have already seen them and emailed the company. These are OEM exhausts converted and not official sports pipes. Sound nice though and am am thinking about trying them if I can't get the current ones sorted. Am off to Bob Watson this afternoon for his take...

Cheers,
Mike

The valve that was replaced was the cut-off valve (from sports to normal mode). Just picked up my car and don't yet know whether this fixed the rattle. The car was with OPC East London.

Bob thinks the noise is coming from the back of the muffler rather than the valve part. He didn't have time to look properly - despite me phoning ahead to check if it was worth making the trip over :-(

Those ebay exhausts are looking better and better at the moment. Has anyone risked them? I can't take that bloody rattle much longer.

Was valve the culprit 997?

Done some calling around and the 997 valve is apparently a known issue on a different designed box. This is not a 996 related issue apparently. Exhausted (groan) all other possibilities I can think of so it looks like baffles. Just had a quote for £740 fitted for *one* muffler. Thats just silly if you ask me. Anyone got a spare sports muffler?..... I won't hold my breath ;-)

I have a 996 with PSE. And no, the rattle is still there and so wasn't the valve.

Ah - thought you had 997. Which side is your problem? Something we might be able to tackle together in some way as I know separate parts are more expensive....that is you are planning on buying a new muffler?
