I saw a link for a track day on the Pistonheads, track day forum.Brands Grand prix circuit, with guys from the SELOC.
This is the first time I have had the CS on the track.
Previous trackdays have all been in prime pork with the lump in the back.
Initial impressions were not favourable, the suspension felt too soft and on a track still drying out I was not as confident in the car as I expected to be.
After a 90mph slide was caught with apparent ease, clearly the car flattering me I never had any problems again and settled into my stride and enjoying the adjustability of the car.It was such a breeze to drive quickly compared to the concentration and finesse you need in an '80s 911.
The car went well,I was in a group with various Elise,340R and the occasional radical SR3.I managed to get past a few Elises, but when they are driven well, they are untouchable through the corners.
I realised for track days,a 968CS with M030 suspension & lsd would be ideal....I may do the suspension & SPG seats, but the car was generally fine safe fun.
If you get the chance to drive the GP circuit at Brands,do as a contender for a British Grand Prix it is much more fun than Silverstone..

interesting post CS
how did the brakes stand up to it and did you "miss" the LSD?
ive gotten pretty comfortable sliding the car now on choice corners and whilst it never feels razor sharp or quick its definitely a car made for predictable drifting even without an LSD

i can imagine how the sport suspension would be too soft for the track, on very fast, smooth roads you can sense a bit of dive/roll and if it gave a good ride this would be perfectly acceptable, but i still cant shake the feeling mine is a bit too nervous and jiggly on broken stuff (bushes, alignment?) so im eager to get the car checked over at a specialist when i finally get the time

The brakes were absolutely fine,,,it was a last minute track day and I had standard (fresh) brake fluid.I am not that hard on brakes as a rule.I was braking from a speed of 115-120mph down to say 75-80mph for curves. The brakes did thier job, despite 180 track miles there is relatively little brake dust and fade wasn't even an issue.
I mention the lsd because my previous track 911 have had them and this car didn't..I felt I was going into corners where I was perhaps getting a little bogged down, before the bite of traction coming in.Not a big problem though. There was the occasional feeling of on a small personal limit of pushing the suspension and not feeling as well held by the "comfort" seats as would have been desired.
I mentioned the one moment of drift on a semi wet track, other than that I had nothing. The car was much faster as the day went on,particularly as I became accustomed to the circuit/car.I didn't drift it again, just made sure I had less lock on for more right foot and kept it all smooth.
To be honest I was a tad disappointed at the way Exige,340R & 111S were able to get away from me,it would have been nice to have some modest pork as comparison, but the car was hugely entertaining.
I did come across a few other things like Cupra R,944S for example and these were vaguely pedestrian...It's just a heavier car than an Elise,,,,respect has grown.

Paul.

Those pesky elise/exige lotae (sp?) are a pain in the arse on short twisty tracks. Unless you've got a good straight to remind them their place on the automotive evolutionary scale as a roller skate, they can be mightyly annoying driving off into the distance.

Glad you enjoyed the first day out on track.

PS - Domster changed his mind on 968CSs following a passenger lap with SFV at the Ring in his CS which has M030 and GT3 brakes, oh and a shit hot high revving fearless driver!!

Was working otherwise I'd have been there. I understand the white M3 was being driven with great gusto too whereas the much modifed green Aston didn't do so well!

For those interested, SELOC now has a reputation for being able to field 20 or so "regulars" and consequently the track day organisers now call them if they have space spare - hence the £150 offer (the others paid £349!). Join SELOC and you'll find track days at Brands Indy for £80 regularly...or how about Bedford long circuit for £130

I ragged the arse (and tyres) off a friend's Caterham up at Elvington a couple of Sundays ago for £30 - booked thru SELOC.

The white E30 was a serious piece of kit, should be for 996TT money! The green AM V8 body style race car was in the garage most of the day and finally seemed to be running well and sounding fantastic by the end of the day.

I was told (can't remember who by) that just changing the anti roll bars to the thicker MO30 items stiffens 'em up nicely for track use, and there is little further benefit gained from the Bilstein dampers. I'd be interested in hearing any first hand views on that ?

Tks for that, they are pretty cheap..I was reading on 968 net or Rennlist that M030 are 30mm front 18mm rear, but the guys fit 21mm or 22mm on the rear.
I concluded that the way the car is set up is spot on for quick road use....I may look into the rollbar issue as a quick way of progress.
GR4 is your car standard spec? have you any track day experience yet as a comparison?

Mine's totally standard spec as well. M030 and LSD were on the shopping list, but in the end I was swayed by a blameless, never been tracked, history. I expect to do 3 or 4 track days a year in it. Just done one so far, Goodwood, and as I've got a bit rusty the car was a lot better than me. It's not quite as stiff as my 911 Turbo was, but is superbly composed and balanced. I've got a day at Bruntingthorpe next week, so I'll see how it behaves there as hopefully I get quicker and push it a bit more. Anti roll bars may well be first on my improvement agenda, but I'd quite like to hear comments from anyone who has done it. CS, I think you'd find the Recaro seat quite beneficial - Hold you very still and really communicate what the car's doing.

Have fun at Bruntingthorpe,,very dirty surface so don't forget to tape up the seriously expensive fog light lenses in case of stone chips.
I am now intrigued by this Roll bar thing,,,hopefully 9M or anyone with 968 experience will be able to shed some light on it.

CS I would hestiate to go much beyond the standard MO30 ARB sizes, as the MO30 set up 968 is just such a fantasticly balanced car. I guess it depends on your driving style and how you want the car to handle, but big thick rear ARB's = understeer if that is all you are modifying.
