OK...educate me please!
Discussion
I am not a huge Porsche fan, I love the performance potential but I am not too keen on a) the rather lacklustre noise that is emitted as standard or b) the fact that, in my eyes all the 911s look the same.
However I am more than willing to be educated as I know that they are awesome cars.
Can someone please show me the way forward and put down a few lines, with pics, to educate me in the differences between...
911
993
996 (X50? (Just available on this variation?))
Turbo
C4S
RS
Carrera
GT1,2 and 3
TT?
and any other current 911 variations that there may be.
Sorry to sound daft but I really am ignorant when it comes to identifying Porsches and whether to be impressed or not!
Thanks for all the help in furthering my PH knowledge.
Phil
Edited to add TT!

I've written a 911 guide for 911's from 1989 to present, to answer questions such as yours & just waiting for our noble leader to post it up on the site.
Ted is it ready to post up yet??
The only bits not covered on your list are GT1 as its not a road going 911 nor are 956 or 962 etc so not covered in this particular guide, bung in Porsche GT1 as a search in yahoo or somat & I'm sure you sill come accross a site that will explain all.
TT simply means Twin Turbo, dunno why people use that term, I don't, basically 993 onwards turbos have twin turbos rather than just one turbo like the 911 turbos of old. So some people use the term TT and many others think they are talking about a rather uninteresting Audi instead

Or try www.dennigcars.com as these guys have done a tech spec on every model.
Very quick summary...
911 - generic term given to anything from Porsche that looks like a fast VW Beetle
993 - the 911 made from 1993 to 1997 or thereabouts. Last of the air cooled ones. Was the final evolution of the very VW Beetle looking original design. Has slopey round headlights and looks a bit like a bar of soap.
996 (X50? (Just available on this variation?)) - latest version of the 911. X50 is a power upgrade spec for the 996 Turbo. Adds about 40 bhp to the car and about 12k to your mortgage. Nice to have if you can afford it, and if you have a 996TT, you can afford it
Turbo - these tend to have a wider body than standard and a rear wing as the intercooler sits inside it
C4S - turbo wide body look and 4 wheel drive (as standard turbos have had since 1993 or so) but minus the rear wing as there's no intercooler to house. Normal engine goes there instead.
RS - stripped, lightened and often tuned versions of the normal lard arsed runabouts 911 driving at its purest, noisiest and probably dangerous. You have to be mad to drive one everyday, but I am and I have.
Carrera - bog standard 911 designation
GT1,2 and 3 - GT1 is a Le Mans race car of which they made a few for the road. Daft. Makes an RS look sensible. The GT2 came in 993 and 996 flavours and is a Turbo with more grunt, less weight and two wheel drive. Probably even more dangerous on a wet road than an RS. GT3 is a 996 with a racing agenda (bigger engine, race suspension etc.), like an RS but not lighter than standard.
TT? As Alex says, Twin Turbo.
Cheers
