Good afternoon Piston Heads,
For those interested in Porsche's; Porsche Centre Sutton Coldfield and Shorade Accident Repair Centre have been carrying out a restoration project on a Porsche 911 964 Carrera 2 Coupe. We have displayed it at shows and open nights throughout the process and the finished vehicle will be on display throughout the weekend at the Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show held at the NEC this year (15-17th November).

If you would like to see the restoration galleries and more information on our project it can be found at:
http://www.porsche.co.uk/suttoncoldfield
and http://www.shorade.co.uk/tag/911restoration/

A detailed copy of the fortnightly newsletter is also available (free) by e-mailing Porsche Sutton Coldfield.

Many thanks,
Vic from Shorade.

Its nice to see an OPC taking this seriously and doing a proper job. I wish you well with the competition. Do you have a buyer lined up for the car or what are your plans for its future.

Unfortunately another OPC thought it was a good idea to respray the wheels with the tyres still attached which comes across very badly for them.

Thanks Magna, at the minute Porsche Sutton Coldfield don’t have a buyer lined up although there has been a lot of interest, especially from the Porsche Club GB.
Porsche Sutton Coldfield plan to have the 964 on display as long as they can as we want as many people to get to see it as possible.

Our 964 came with 993 wheels and we actually found a Porsche Club owner who wanted to do a wheel swap, the 964 wheels needed a complete refurbishment and Shorade have an in-house wheel refurbishment facility so we completely stripped the wheels, power coated and completed a full refurbishment. Once the wheel refurbishment was completed we fitted genuine Bridgestone tyre’s for the model.

Hi Paul it’s in the final stages and has come back from Porsche Sutton Coldfield today with the engine fitted, final photo’s will be going up on Monday and here’s the link to Shorade’s gallery http://www.shorade.co.uk/galleries/porsche-911rest...

Many thanks,
Vic.

It was Cardiff OPC. I've seen the car twice, when it was stripped & last weekend completed on a 911 at 50 display.

It's absolutely spot on & beautiful in every way, already sold to a new owner who will take the keys sometime in October. A lot of people have got excited by the wheel refurb but I can assure you it was a top job, & I'm very fussy about things like that.

Maybe the wheels were almost perfect to begin with. I just have difficulty understanding why they would cut corners.

I could be wrong but believe 14 dealerships and affiliated approved body repairers within the Porsche network have opted to enter the competition.

To be honest we've really enjoyed it and hope they do something similar next year. It's amazing how many people have approached us asking about their own classics that wouldn't have previously approached us even though we have all the correct tooling, training, equipment and parts.

Looking forward to seeing all the finished Classics at the Porsche Experience Centre!

Thanks Tyinsky, on the Porsche highlights article theirs also a bodyshop edition newsletter which has a bit more info from a bodywork perspective. Would be great to see some PistonHeads at the open weekend and the NEC Motor Show so you can see it up close.

Best wishes,

Vic.

Shorade, what did you do with the interior? There are a couple of pictures of the seat beforehand, not much else.

Can you give a lowdown? Love restoration threads! smile

As many as that.

Must be good to work on the actual car rather than plug and playsmile

Hi Paul thanks for asking smile

The actual condition of the interior wasn't too bad. Porsche Centre Sutton Coldfield managed to source a local Interior Trimmer, the seats were taken out and checked over, the seat bolsters and backs were quite worn and scratched so the leather needed to be replaced, thankfully the cloth with Porsche script across it just needed cleaning and tidying which was fortunate as that particular material & script type was unavailable. The interior door covers were okay but the backing inserts were rotten so the Trimmer unpicked the cloth from the back, replaced the backing and re-attached the cloth.

The floor carpets were okay, no holes etc so our valeter will thoroughly clean these today whilst he does the swissvax treatment.
The steering wheel has been re-trimmed and the handbrake and gear lever leather has been replaced.

Here's a picture of the interior finished and displayed at the Porsche Club night before fitted.

Many thanks,

Vic.

It is interesting, our Strip and Fitter Ben has found it really interesting. One of the things he mentioned was that compared to the accident damaged vehicles we see every day he's had to treat it completely differently because generally you check the vehicle over as a whole but if it's had a collision there is a main point of impact which needs to be repaired and trained technicians have a good knowledge of how it will also affect surrounding areas and which other parts need to be looked at and repaired/ replaced.

The difference with the restoration project is because it's a classic it could potentially have damage everywhere, depending on the vehicles history, corrosion or rot could be present or it could have had previous collisions in it's lifetime and not been repair properly, so he found himself taking extra time working round the vehicle inch by inch and had to be really careful especially stripping it so that he didn't cause any additional damage in weaker areas. The main area's of corrosion on the 964 were the rear tail lamp buckets which were past a repairable state so had to be cut out, have new panels drafted over the buckets with completely new buckets welded in to the body and then the body was treated with an anti-corrosion process, primed and painted.

Any PH'ers like to give a figure as to what this is worth now? And i wonder if there is a 2 year warranty with it...tongue in cheek!

Hi Petop great questions!

All genuine Porsche parts fitted to the 964 come with the Porsche's manufacturers parts warranty, all bodywork carried out at Shorade receives a warranty and I believe Porsche Sutton Coldfield are currently reviewing the options as they generally sell used Porsches with the standard two years Porsche Approved warranty however generally the Porsche warranty renewable coverage criteria applies to vehicles up to 10 years old and the 964 was first registered in 1989. They have plenty of time to review though as they are looking to display the 964 for as long as possible in the Showroom.

Many thanks,

Vic.
