Apologies for the long(ish) post but would appreciate your thoughts.

Bought a pre-used 997 Carrera (1105 with 6k on the clock) from a London OPC two months ago. Since had a persistent electrical fault leading to the car having to go back three three times and scheduled to be picked up again by OPC tomorrow morning (long boring saga...!)

I'm a new Porsche driver having had three M3s before (not a single fault on any..) and so was very surprised at this. Several toys have been thrown out of prams during the past two months but now enough is enough.

I had a 'chat' with the MD of the OPC in question and pointed out some UK customer rights, namely the Sales of Goods Act. i.e. Doesn't matter if its a diswasher or 70k car, if you receive a defective product from a manufacturer and they are not able to repair it in a reasonable manner (fourth attempt tomorrow), then you are entitled to a full refund if the product was purchased within 90days. Should have heard the tone change and a call was promised back with a potential solution.

That's the bad news, here's the good news: the OPC in question have offered me three choices:

1) I keep my car and they will carry on trying to fix it.
2) I trade up to a Carrera S
3) I trade to another model (Cayman)

Option 1: Not for me as I'm totally fed up with the car.

Option 2: As my car was pre-used I can't expect an exact replacement. However, they have a Carrera S which is identical (and slightly better in spec) although different colour and worth 3k more than mine was new. They have offered to trade mine in at 100% of what I paid and adjust the financing terms so that my monthly payments are exacly the same.

Option 3: They have a pretty nearly fully loaded Cayman S (PASM, 19in, Chrono, etc) that I could have. This would mean a fairly hefty reduction in monthly payments and balloon.

I originally went for the 997 Carrera as I've always dreamed of owning a 911 (wasn't bothered about it not being an S at the time) and it was all that I could afford. Since then have found it slighly lacking in power (even compared to my M3s) and think a Carrera S might be the answer. As they will compensate me with better financing its like getting a totally free upgrade.

However, the last two times my own was in I was given a Cayman S as a loan car and I really enjoyed it. And to be honest, from the inside it pretty much looks like a 911..! I'm an average driver who uses the car to commute, weekends away but never on the track so not looking for the last ounce of performance. Having a fully loaded Cayman and lower payments is therefore quite tempting.

As such, any real life experiences/differences would be much appreciated. Particularly from anybody who has owned both cars at some time (lessons learnt, etc).

As a side note, it shows that sometimes the customer does win.. Most people get walked over by the big car companies because they don't know their rights. If done in the right way (i.e. not some cheesy "I'll see you in court..", the threat of legal action can be a very powerful tool when you are in the right.

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like you've made your mind up. The 997 doesn't have enough power, yet it doesn't matter that the Caymen doesn't either.

At least you can say you've done the 911 thing. Nice dilema to have.

do you have kids? or planing some? the reason I chose used 911 over new boxster, is I can get kids in the back. My wife does have a good practical car, but it would break my heart to have to walk past my porsche on a sunday to take out a normal car when we go out.

A 911 can be used as the main car.

Sorry to hear your having such grief....

I was in a similar quandry a few months back, to get either a new spec'ed up Cayman S or a pre owned 911. But in the end it was a no brainer the power and the sound of the 997S just blew me away..combined with the bigger alloys, lowered suspension (PASM sport mode for really canning it) and the most sexy 911 shape ever!! if you can go with the S

Unless the monthly payment difference is big, and you don't mind keeping the same payments as currently, deffo option 2.

just to be different - Option 3. Get the Cayman S. 2 sets of golf clubs, 2 weekends bags and it beat the 997 S round the track........

Guess what car I have? ;-)

Option 2 - but you didn't say whether the 997S was new/ex-demo/used. I'd push him and ask for a straight swap with the S - No adjustment to the finance.

Oh, and post the vin of your rogue car on here to make sure that no unfortunate PH'er buys it off their forecourt

Def the 997S. Unless the Cayman deal is soooooo much better (and then beat them with a stick), the Cayman is not the one to get. Having it as a loan car is fine, its a fun point-and-shoot toy, but I wouldn't choose it to live with.....

Sorry X15 - major post tangent, but will keep quiet after this.

PARR are having fun finding lots of wear and tear problems with it - also known as "inept owner maintenance", whilst I am working in Manila for a couple of weeks. It will be back soon.

Isn't the Cayman about 4 seconds (5%) behind the 997 C2S on the Evo track ?

Thanks for all the replies.. Definitely leaning towards the Carrera S..

If I go down that route, will make sure to post the VIN of my old car as a warning for others looking to buy.

I'd go with the S...

...but only after trying to get a turbo out of them.

Good luck!

In case you're interested, was approached about buying the plate "1 JEB" as its currently for sale... Price: £45k...!!
