Horse brasses and beard alert!
Discussion
I finally bought a 993 a couple of weeks ago. Prior to that, I had posted a load of threads asking Porker n00b questions, and I suspect that a number of people who took the time to respond probably doubted whether I'd ever actually buy one!
Well, yah boo sucks to them, cos I did! I finally got around to giving it a quick wash (as it was filthy when I collected it) and breaking out the camera, so here are a few (pretty uninspired) pics:
I've done around 450 miles in it so far, although the majority of those have been motorway miles. It feels very different to the S2000 I've driven for the past 4 years - the floor-mounted pedals and the heavier brakes and clutch in particular. But I'm gradually getting to grips with it and absolutely lovely the sound of the flat six at wide open throttle
All in all, well worth the wait!

Arse. Uninspired as they are, the pics are still better than those red Xs.
I'm trying to link to pics stored on flickr. I used the [pic]URL[/ pic] codes. Anyone have any idea where I went wrong.....?

Yes but don't forget the change the pic as that one is rank!
I DID say they were crap! I just snapped a few before the fading light disappeared completely. I'm sure I'll get around to taking a few more scenic ones!
Thanks for the pointers, BG
(Just need to figure out now why it left the first one but resized the others! Doh)

WHY anyone could prefer the looks of the 996 to those of the 993 is beyond me. That has to be one of the prettiest cars Porsche has ever built, IMHO. (Although I'd have it in dark blue. Probably.)
My thoughts entirely, Oli!
My last three cars have all been blue, the last one almost exactly the same colour as Porsche's Midnight Blue, and the one before that very similar indeed to Iris Blue. So I figured it was maybe time for a change - but it was more a case of whichever colour car came up first that was at the right price and ticked all the boxes I needed ticked.
Congratulations - nice car - but I would say that, wouldn't I! - look at my website! http://tinyurl.co.uk/sc72
I write because I'm wondering about the apparent lack of a plastic film (Armourfend?) on the leading edge of the rear wings, to protect them against stone damage. At least, that's what I assume it's for - these were already fitted to my car when I bought it about three years ago.
Perhaps I just can't see the film in your photographs, but if it's not there, I wonder whether it was an extra on mine and not a standard fitting? When I had some minor damage done to my car, the Porsche bodyshop in Tunbridge Wells replaced the entire wing (fortunately at someone else's expense!) and included this film, so I'm now wondering whether they were simply matching up with the other wing or the film is standard? Does anyone else have this stuff fitted?

Although you can't see it in the pictures, there is plastic film on the rear wings immediately behind the doors. I don't know whether it was fitted at new or whether one of the previous owners added it subsequently.
Bollocks to all that 'horse brass' bullshit from the water-cooled crew, it's getting boring. The 993 *is* a damn fine car, regardless of the fact that it's a bit older than a 996. One of the enduring beautiful car designs.
Only thing about the Targa I don't like much is the standard wheel fitment. IIRC the wheels are special lightweight jobbies to counteract the increased weight (and higher CofG) caused by the glass targa roof, so it wouldn't pay to swap to other OEM 993 wheels.
However the Carrera 2002 wheel (996 fitment, 18" 5 spoke classic design) is, IIRC, not only lighter than the other 993 wheels but on a par with the Targa wheel. They also look excellent on 993s, so potentially an option if you're not in love with the Targa wheels! IMO you can definitely feel the difference in handling on 993s with different wheels - I have a winter set and a summer set, the winters are heavier (and have heavy winter tyres) and there's a world of difference in response. (Yeah, there are a lot of variables there, but I reckon my conclusion still stands).
Now you need a supercharger! A fast Targa would be very cool.
