Any articles/opinions on 993 TT v/s 996 TT?
Discussion
Both these cars are more or less in the same price bracket now, and I would be interested in a read up or some opinions!
The 993TT is certainly more asthetically pleasing to my eye, but I wonder if the 996TT is such a quantum leap ahead in performance so as to warrant purchasing the younger model?
During a conversation in passing, I was told that the 996's are made out of "monkey metal" compared to the 993's...has the build quality suffered by any chance?

Big difference in the cars ..i have driven quite a few 993t's and own a 996tt..993tt is much better looking, better made, more traditional with air cooling etc and if i could find a good one i would consider buying one to stick in the garage.Driving the 993tt is certainly more of an event than the 996tt and certainly has more crediblity especially with Porsche fans. The upside with the 996tt is it feels much more useable, feels safer and obviously has many improvements e.g air con/heater etc works properly. The steering on the 996tt is way more positive imo than the 993 tt where it tends to feel a bit vague. The modernization that the 996 has over the 993 makes it an everyday car whereas the 993 if it was mine would be used as a 'summer' toy only because in some conditions it would not be that easily useable.I nearly bought a 450bhp 993tt a few months back off a guy who then drove my 996tt(he'd never driven one before)and he was shocked at how much better the 996tt was to drive than his..On the way home i kept wondering why i would pay 10k more for a car that was 6 years older, less easy to drive and nowhere near as easy to drive quickly with a sticky gearbox and vague steering...looks and rarity of owning a mint condition 993tt were the only justifcation. The 993TT is certainly more asthetically pleasing to my eye, but I wonder if the 996TT is such a quantum leap ahead in performance so as to warrant purchasing the younger model?

My dad has owned a 993tt for 9 years, the car has done 23k miles.
He would like another car but the 996tt does not do anything for him.
The 996tt is a lovely car, easier to drive, feels quicker, smoother,a much better car if you want to run it daily. The 993 has more of a feeling of occasion when driven, so it is a high day & holiday car for him.
If you cannot decide, get a 993tt, if you don't like it you won't lose much if any money, and buy a 996tt instead as there are plenty of them about. I would have the 993tt personally, but I qualify for the real ale and arran sweater brigade as I have a 964.

There's an article somewhere ( i expect VS has it) that shows the 993TT is quicker than the 996 - not what i'd call a quantum leap.
Your wish is my command:

Wise words there... (not that the rest of you haven't been helpful!). I am drawn to the 993t I must admit, since I am a weekend driver and a week in rider. I am seeing prices at anything between 30k - 55k. What gets you a good, high mileage deal (I think these are the best bets since the engines are bullet proof and the miles lead to very little depreciation).

Strasse in Leeds have a 80K mile 993tt for £38K. It has had the wheels re furbed and the paintwork has been freshened up (front pu painted to get rid of stone chips).
It is a car that I got excited about and wanted to buy, but other reasons (new furniture / new facias, soffits / paying lump off motgage)have prevented me, I'd even got a cost to swap from my 964 which was very reasonable.
The only possible downside in some peoples eyes being the colour, arena red. I would not mind, as I am not a fan of silver or dark blue which lots of others prefer.
Strasse have also sold an aventure green and a white 993tt in the last 3 weeks, both of which were nice 'cos they were different.

Thanks for the tip. Personally, I am a big fan of a black 993. There is a superb example of a Turbo S that has just sold in the PH classifieds.

I'd also like to point out that the 993TT can be driven very quickly indeed. Porsche4life had one and even though he could get a milk float around bedford quick he really opened my eyes to how quick these cars can be.
P4L in his GT2, 993ken in his GT3 RS and me in my TT all have plenty of fun together so there's little doubt that despite a little vagueness in the steering (which disappears when you lean on the tyres a bit) the cars are very capable with a little bit of driver training

I have always gone for 993 over 996.
Main reason was being a tight a*e and not having the cash to loose on depreciation.
3 yrs ago mate bought a 996tt and I bought 993, he is -40k and I was -2k past 5years have been cheap motoring for 993 owners.
Had the depreciation thing not been an issue I would rather have gone for a 996.
Maybe this will be true for 996 vs 997 45k 996tt vs 110k 997tt.

I think the 993 is just beautiful to look at, equal to ferraris and lambos in it's time, whereas the 996 doesn't have that wow factor, a little soul is lost in every reincarnation, the pinnacle of which was the Turbo4, the Turbo S is a better car, but downhill since then.
I would love to find a low mileage 993 Turbo S in Black too!
But it hurts when I see the prices, I turned one down about 4 yrs ago for 65K, they are worth more than that now!

Sorry but i have to whole heartedly disagree with this, the 993 Turbo S is IN NO WAY a better car than a 993 Turbo, save perhaps from a "perceived value" and hence depreciation perspective.
Yes, I would agree with VS here too...
VS, anymore articles with more depth to them? Thirst for knowledge here!
Edited to say: whatlovely photographs of your cars on your site! They look mint.

I believe the choice between the two cars depends on how you plan to use them. I drive a 996 every day, the 993 is my weekend toy. The 996 is very capable but probably too refined, the 993 feels much more special.
In terms of comfort I think the only issue with the 993 is that the steering is much heavier, other than that the 993 is fine.
