Even with the favourable rate, are they cheap enough after shipping & light conversions etc etc?

Does anyone have a working example?

Forget about the forex & conversion, the killers are Gordon's grab - duty and VAT.

Even so, a number of US examples have been picked up there and brought into Europe for re-sale by independent car dealers.

There is VAT to pay when the car enters the UK but the situation with duty is not as straightforward as it first appears.

The lights are expensive (£2k each front, £1k each rear), however I've been reliably informed the fronts don't need changing.

With shipping and everything above factored in, there are substantial savings over the price of any other UK or European car that has been for sale.

Are they such bargains? I can't see any below $300k, which after taxes on top of about $100k, is £200k into the UK.....And most are asking nearer $350k.

Ah, didn't know that no import duty due on Euro cars under 3yrs old. That saves another 10%.

Pity it doesn't apply to American cars, I quite fancy a Ford GT.

The two cars that Bergmeister and I bought were very keenly priced. Some US dealers are asking mid 300's+ and are happy to sit on the cars for a while. I don't think either of us will be willing to be specific on exactly what they have cost however!

Bergmeister spent a great deal of time and effort investigating the whole process and found that it was financially beneficial. Up to you guys to do the same and reap the financial rewards!

At the price the car has cost I will be much more comfortable with using it on track/putting 5k miles a year on it than if I had bought one at European prices.

The engine note alone is worth big bucks, enjoy your new cars.

I know where there is a nice gt40 in gulf colours if interested, can be got a good price i think with the dollar.email me if you want to know about the gt40.
RSR you have let the cat out, cant wait until the traffic jam of cgt at spa etc
I think from todays enquires with the usa,the usa are wise to us,and prices are firm or going up.
I have to say the cars we found were well under described in condition.
I think if you can get a nice CGT for early 200ish then its a lot of car for the money, yes a lot of money still, but what a car.

How certain are you of this? It is not what I had understood to be the case and if true (I really hope it is) it will presumably lead to an influx of US Porsches into the euro markets, since new Porsches are priced at much lower levels that Euro levels, let alone UK levels. eg 997GT3 is at USD106,000= £53.5k, 997TT at USD 122,900=£62,070, even with vat these would be £63k and £73k respectively (compared to £80k and £98k in the UK).

Make sure you check that; I wouldn't assume it.

In the States, RRPs are pre-tax. Tax rates vary from state to state; some states have none.

All the time people are buying used cars in one state but taking them home to another state, which may have lower sales tax rate. In doing so, they do not get to claim back the tax differential.

What is more likely is that, if the car is for export, you won't have to pay tax on top of the RRP, rather than getting a tax rebate on a used car whose tax was paid some time in the past, to some state which may not be the one in which you are buying it.
