I know, who the heck spec'd these interiors. Ghastly. I just used it as an example, plenty more 2.7's around.

My S caused me no pain for the 4 yes I ran it.
It did however put a massive grin on my face, took me to the south of France 4 times and showed up a few TVRs on Sunday runs!
I am correct in saying the 2.7 doesn't suffer with bore score ?

Bad news is IMS, read up on it and you might not buy Porsche all together!

I could factor this in to an "IMS account" I see the pricing is as follows from Autofarm.

986 Boxster / 996 Carrera (2WD) – Manual models All + VAT
IMS bearing replacement only £1,300.00
IMS bearing replacement + clutch kit £1,650.00
IMS bearing replacement + clutch kit + dual-mass flywheel £2,150.00

To put this into perspective, I've spent close to 3k on a 52 plate entry level MGTF (yikes, all got a bit real there).

Buying a performance car is one thing, running one properly is another.

Everything is relative - running a Porsche isn't expensive if you look at some other marques.

No one ever lies on their deathbed thinking "wish I'd saved more money and not bought so many silly cars".
Would I recommend a Boxster (or any non Turbo) Porsche, maybe not following last weeks 'episode'. frown

Yes, the Internet (and Porsche specialists) are full of broken Porsches, and running costs are never going to be cheap, yes you can upgrade the IMS but there's always something to empty your piggy bank even if that's fine, I managed to surprise my Indy with the 1st 2.7 Boxster he's seen throw a conrod out the top of the block....but don't let that put you off. hehe

I should add I have a Cayenne, which we've had since new and did have a 987 previously.. So Porsche bills aren't a shock to the system. I'm weird in that I think anything over 25pmg is fantastic.

As you've said its all relative, it's a half decent car and as such comes with running costs. I just didn't want to buy into a known problem.

Really appreciate all the advice and help.

New interior and wheels? ;-)
Agree. Wheels and interior are awful. Is it missing the hood lining or didn't the early cars have it? I think you could do a lot better for the money. I paid £400 more (albeit private) for a newer, lower mileage, 2.7 with a much better spec.

All,

Great thread this. I have spent the last few days reading the first 42 pages, just another 40 to go.. smile

I have collated all the good tips from the first 42 pages into a useful word doc of hints, what to look out for, improvements etc. Am happy to send it to anyone who’s interested.

Now, I need some help. I’m looking for a Silver S manual max 75k miles preferably max £7k.
I have found these 2 cars. As I’m London based I'm going to go see the Portiacraft one today. The 2nd/Nottingham one looks well priced. Does anyone know these cars?

Hi Brendon,

Could you please share your word doc summary with me? I'm looking for a car now, having just missed out on a £3400 2.5 car locally in Bristol :-(

Many thanks,

Andy

In the main I'd agree as to 'fix' the IMS is beer money relatively and at the age and mileage most 986 are they will need a clutch anyway if not already recently done so the bulk o the labour is accounted for.

However, if you buy one and do nothing and are unlucky then the collateral damage with IMS is potentially more catastrophic. At least with bore scoring you may not score all the cylinders but the preventative fix buys you a whole 986!

I've had a recent quote for a rebuild to 3.6. It's a big commitment obviously and buys you a whole 986 again quite comfortably if you are that way inclined.

My poverty pork will hopefully live again, just not in my hands after this little 'mishap'

I'm told this is VERY rare by my local indy, conrod went through the top of the block, only other cars he's seen do this are highly stressed 911's usually while driven 'on track' driving
The bill to put it back on the road was going to be about £2.5k for a used engine, another £1k to IMS proof it, and another £1k to swap it all over, add in a few more £££'s for things that get found on the way and on a car worth £4.5 it wasn't worth doing, so sold it to one of the mechanics and he's rebuilding it in his spare time. rotate
