Day 12 Update - Ring Laps

Day 12 Ring Laps

Two laps at the Nordschleife. The first is with Wifey as a passenger.

The second, starts at 10:18 and is with an English chap (Carl) that jumped in when I mentioned to a group of people that I had a passenger seat available. Apologies in advance for the squealing :-)

Day 13 - Nurburgring to Brussels

Approximately 350kms and 3hrs driving. Weather flipped between atrocious rain and sunny with fluffy clouds. We also met a few Brits that we had spoken with at the Ring the previous day.

At the start of the journey we skipped the direct route and opted for a trip via the smaller roads directly through the Eifel Mountains.

Meeting a 993 we had spoken with at the Ring the previous day.

We are using the Sofitel in Brussels (http://www.sofitel.com/gb/hotel-5282-sofitel-brussels-europe/index.shtml). Good parking.

Day 10 - Update

Day 10 Video

Day 10 of our 2012 Euro-Trip. The E74 was part of our route from Côte d'Azur to Lake Como. An excellent road, very quiet with a final set of hairpins at the top before you have to stop at the "one-way" tunnel through the mountain.

If someone can check the video audio for me please, it would be appreciated. I have a penchant for 90s electro music, especially as there tends to be less copyright restrictions on it as well. YouTube current thinks I am in Germany and the audio on the Day 10 video is intermittently blocked for me.

Just reviewing the video archive, I have about 160Gb of HD footage I need to edit down. We pretty much had the cameras running non-stop. I'd like to create a "blooper" reel as well. We had multiple occasions where cars pulled out in front of us, a few very hairy moments with truckers making full use of both sides of a tight mountain road as well. Finally, I definitely need to include the multiple pedestrians that would jump out in front of us at random moments as well.

EDIT: Has you car got PASM and PSE? Also, when you did your laps/fast road are you disengaging PSM?

Cheers

Great!

Re: Pace - Wait till you see THE "N260" video. ;-)

Re: PASM, ah no. But I do have Quaife LSD. Seems to help with the tight hairpins and bumps.

Really really looking forword to this. Back in Spain in early June but heading south from Santandar with the wife, so sensible driving. I was supposed to be going N260 way in late September with me mates, but last week bought another house ........ so now officially very broke so the Autumn trip is in doubt.

I need to see this video to keep me sane.

Fantastic

Redback You have to keep going, forever!!
This is one of the best threads I have seen on any car enthusiasts forum.
Thanks for taking the time and effort to post up the daily activity. Its also been a pleasure to watch the 'YouTube' videos and watch a fantastic car being driven fast and with great skill.
Day 10 reminds me of some driving I did down some canyons in the Rockies in 1976, only in a hire car though.
The 'Ring laps bought back memory's of a trip about 20 of us did there in 2008. Had 30 laps in my then lowered Focus ST with 270hp, had an amazing time.

P.S. I have arranged with UK Custome to have you deported back to Europe as soon as you hit Dover. We need you keep posting for the rest of summer!!!

Day 14 - Brussles to the Cumbria - Around 800km in about 8hrs.

All good things come to an end.

Well, mixed emotions. Glad to be home, but a feeling that something amazing is now over. We left at 7am (Brussels Time) this morning and arrived in Cumbria around 15:00. The longest day and the M25 and M1 feels like a prayer wheel to Satan. Driving on the continent makes you realise how awful our lane discipline is and how tiresome our speed restrictions are. Wow, how I miss driving on the Continent. Luckily after Manchester, and specifically Preston the M6 becomes a fairly decent motorway and Northerners are so much better drivers ;-)

Entering the Lakes on the dual carriageway is a joy but getting flashed by an irate driver because I happened to blast past them “a little” above the speed limit just reminded me of how sanctimonious us Brits can be.

Leaving the hotel in Brussels

Feeling a Steve McQueen "Bullitt" moment coming on.

Loving the tunnels for sound around the Brussels inner ring.

Belgium motorways towards Calais.

Channel Tunnel

Back in the UK, M20. Must resist open highways.

The road home. Just a few minutes to go.

Thank You Porsche

The car was awesome, simply brilliant. Totally and utterly reliable and no issues, problems, gripes, nits at all. The oil indicator showed we used one bar of oil. The only issue we had regarding the car was the PCM reset itself just as we passed Birmingham on the M6, personally I think the car was just rebelling and after the recent miles and locations who can blame it.

Here is the Trip Meter:

In total over 14 days we drove 3559 miles for a total of 66hrs and 11 minues of actual driving, fuel consumption was around 24mpg and average speed for the trip was 55mph.

Thanks PistonHeads

Emi (Wifey) and I really appreciated all the comments and suggestions we received over the last two weeks. We have had a FANTASTIC time and really enjoyed blogging our trip. We have many more picture and videos to show you. We will also provide more information on the hotels/locations and provide the TomTom Routes for each of the days, specifically the scenic tours.

It was such a struggle to take the Channel Tunnel exit, all i could think about was carrying on to Brittany and exploring the Atlantic Coast

A hotel list will be invaluable for us as it's the one thing I'm struggling with, thanks in advance.

Brilliant........thanks for the write-up and images, sounds like you had a ball wink

And as a direct result I've now convinced my good lady to plant the kids with friends/MIL for a long weekend, we're taking the 911 on a tour of France in July......and do you know what.......she's agreed and I'm looking where we're going for four nights smile

Good to see a car being used and enjoyed as it should be, having driven to Amsterdam and back twice last week (both times in a day!) I know how you feel about the roads in Europe. The drivers may pull out in front of you at the last minute, but their lane discipline is so much better than ours, and the roads are there to be driven on in the right car at the right speed wink
