Better at track work than one of your many RSs?
For the road, it's a brilliant car. Feels very special, beautiful steering, very engaging, playful, but benign (on your side). The RS' are also engaging, but less playful, and probably not quite as good a steer.

I know it might be heretic to say this, but I'm not a track slag.

Interesting that. The suspension change to KWs must really have changed the car a lot as the standard e92 m3 is a long way off steering anything like as well as the 7gt3 imo.For the road, it's a brilliant car. Silver Grey is great on the e46. My M3 has black leather but I prefer the Imola as a contrast.Sure they are not perfect and need a bit of tinkering - brakes, suspension, seats, etc. But then a lot cheaper than most 911s and after these upgrades should be very good to go...

M3s are beginning to look very interesting for basic manual experience...I just bought an E46 M3 for a bit of light fun as they seem too good a proposition to ignore...

Imola looks fantastic on the e46. I'm a big fan of M3s. One of the best road cars around. The CSL for noise, manual CS for that CSL feeling in manual, GTS for driving experience, and an imola red evo individual (GT2) as a retro. Sure they are not perfect and need a bit of tinkering - brakes, suspension, seats, etc. But then a lot cheaper than most 911s and after these upgrades should be very good to go...

I've not driven one, but how does steering feel compare for E36/E46 against 996 and 997? Sure they are not perfect and need a bit of tinkering - brakes, suspension, seats, etc. But then a lot cheaper than most 911s and after these upgrades should be very good to go...

I couldn't find a decent manual CS so ended up with a manual regular M3. Plus the upgrades I'm doing should make it a better steer.

In my case the car will have KW Clubsport suspension, upgraded suspension arms to allow track orientated geo, and an upgraded steering rack to make it (I believe) a faster rack than the CS, plus AP Racing brakes all round.....so after all that it better be a great drive!
I haven't had it long enough to write with more detail but so far it feels agile, darty, with good steering feel which once the rack is changed hopefully will be even more direct.

Hmm - my only comparison is with GT3 / RS variants where it can't really compete. However, it's not bad at all especially considering the comparative price point.

Is it a standard M3 rack? The CS and CSL rack is quicker and as a result much better than the standard. I think the z3 rack is supposed to be quicker still? In my case the car will have KW Clubsport suspension, upgraded suspension arms to allow track orientated geo, and an upgraded steering rack to make it (I believe) a faster rack than the CS, plus AP Racing brakes all round.....so after all that it better be a great drive!

The e36 is a very lazy rack and the steering feel is nothing to write home about, but still better than a lot of the e steering crap.
The CS and CSL are both pretty good, but largely because they are quick. Certainly and improvement over both the E36 and standard E46.
The GTS is better than an RS in my view. Or at least as good. It's beautifully analogue, connected and immediate. It's feel special from the first corner.
Overall, great cars that you can have a bit of arse out fun in, and as you say, on standard form, very affordable.

I think the overview is : Pre Brexit - no
Post Brexit - no one knows
Do the enthusiasts care - not one bit .
Do the speculators care - only if they have to force sell. If not , it's irrelevant as any potential short term decline will not matter in the long term.
More importantly how's "my" lovely car !
It's the car I love the most, owning, looking at and more importantly driving. The tactility, the thought and effort required and the fluidity and the pace all add up to a special experience. Oh and without question its cool. I regularly feel like a bit of a tit in the McLaren. I regularly feel like Steve McQueen in the 911S.

They are so very lovely and everyone thinks so . It's impossible to stop anywhere in this without someone coming over and saying nice things about it - they are brilliant cars to drive - great fun. My only concern is I don't feel like Steve McQueen in mine - maybe I should take it back , it must be faulty !Self created gratuitous photo opportunity - apologies
